Sorry all but I have to disagree. Nothing worse than an empty stadium and nothing better than a full stadium.  Very little  $$ (if any) will go to the clubs now. I prefer the neutral venue. 10,000 at Basso, SF, EF, Joond or Leederville would have been my preference over 10,000 at Optus.

Anyone know how much SF made through bars, venders and gates last year?

All the particpating clubs made $45,000.00 cash profit, which was a total profit of $250,000.00 equally divided.

And that was with a covid cap of 10,000.

Now that we are at Phase 5 , Fremantle could of had 17,000, Joondalup and Basso maybe 20,000.

So you could of been looking at $500,000 profit around $100,000 cash to each club, that in WAFL terms is serious cash,

The other thing is we need to get away from the idea that the ground needs to be filled, as it does not.

That's strange logic there Ark, the juxtaposition is an empty stadium is good. Surely the fuller the better!

There is a huge difference between the comment that the attendance at the stadium does not need to be at maximum capacity and an empty stadium.

Not really - shouldnt we be aiming for the biggest crowd we can get, sounds like a capitulation to the fact we are doomed to shit crowds for ever.

My point exactly and forcing people to sit on cracked concrete in the outer at Freo Oval is assuredly not the way to maximise attendances.

wrong again, the max last year was 10K which was assurdley acheived at Fremantle and I distinctly remember sitting on cracked on crete at Subi in 1979 wnhen we had 53,000 at a WAFL GF, you know Swan when the WAFL was the real deal!

I've also had the occasional splinter in the hand from the Bassendean Wooden Pickets, that I can assurdely tell you never stopped capcity crowds at Basso either.

Ark is surely right.

We don’t need to fill the stadium to have the WAFL GF played there.

It is the WAFL GF. It deserves to be played there. End of story.

Work out EVERYTHING else later.

And don’t come back at me with maths and finances and the realities of the modern world. Not interested.

Thats about as much sense as your tip of Perth defo beating EF,,,,,

The apparent re-think or backflip is a good one
Hopefully this becomes a non negotiable into our future - hopefully

Just depends how Optus Management run it mate into the future, as long as they are reasonable on the costings and don't try and fleece a comp that is reliant on subsidies to stay afloat then that keeps it viable, remember the venue is out of control of the comp.

I had raised eyebrows at the sudden backflip from even 2 months ago when it appeared certain from all angles we were looking at suburban grounds again - we deserve the big stadium footy deserves the big stadium the fans deserve the big stadium
No other ground has every best scenario facility (yet) to host it mate
Fremantle Oval , for one example , might in the future but not yet that's for sure

I think you are right, at the moment any crowd around the 20k or more mark cannot be accomodated other than Optus, that might change in the future, but for now that's the only option which leaves them with an exploitable monoply.

just no idea as to why it took so bloody long to just make the decision - last year was understandable given the restrictions and what was on us all , but this year apart from the typical Victorian chaos was going to be all clear due to the good work done by WA

Mate Venues West are involved, my guess is they came to party late, realised they needed to drop the price to be attractive, but then again looking at the way they have managed every other venue and sent operators literally bankrupt one wonders whats the small print.

Exactly. The ground management are working under the venues west company. Obviously behind the scenes deal has been struck to allow the Wafl ground final to proceed there. That is why the decision took so long.

they are just a tenderer to run the joint - one that was accepted by the state government or dept that the new stadium comes under
I think it was the Libs who first gave them Joondalup from memory - Barnett was in it

Spot on, sounds as if they came in late to the party as well, as there was no mention of them intially the only interest was from Fremantle and Joondalup. Probably got the guilts or a prod from someone.

At Basso are you stopped from bringing your own chair to sit on in outer?  Could you do that at the GF at Freo Oval last year.  Do I think we should played the WAFL GF at Basso?  No I don't.

When Basso was packed in the 70s and 80s from memory it was standing room only on most of the bank and was Fremantle, I happily stood all through last years GF , just as I had stood all through the 1979 GF at Subi on the old concrete steps when wafl was king. Great memories and what Wafl is all about, shoulder to shoulder with your mates.
