The apparent re-think or backflip is a good one
Hopefully this becomes a non negotiable into our future - hopefully

Just depends how Optus Management run it mate into the future, as long as they are reasonable on the costings and don't try and fleece a comp that is reliant on subsidies to stay afloat then that keeps it viable, remember the venue is out of control of the comp.
I had raised eyebrows at the sudden backflip from even 2 months ago when it appeared certain from all angles we were looking at suburban grounds again - we deserve the big stadium footy deserves the big stadium the fans deserve the big stadium
No other ground has every best scenario facility (yet) to host it mate
Fremantle Oval , for one example , might in the future but not yet that's for sure

I think you are right, at the moment any crowd around the 20k or more mark cannot be accomodated other than Optus, that might change in the future, but for now that's the only option which leaves them with an exploitable monoply.

The other thing is we need to get away from the idea that the ground needs to be filled, as it does not.

That's strange logic there Ark, the juxtaposition is an empty stadium is good. Surely the fuller the better!
There is a huge difference between the comment that the attendance at the stadium does not need to be at maximum capacity and an empty stadium.

Not really - shouldnt we be aiming for the biggest crowd we can get, sounds like a capitulation to the fact we are doomed to shit crowds for ever.

20k at Optus works as has been shown when the 2 eastern states AFL clubs played there with that sort of crowd and the atmosphere was very good. Given a fine day for the WAFL GF and 20k turn up that would just about fill the bottom tier so that would also look good for the TV and if it's a late arvo or evening game all seats would be in the shade. I recall the Su v WP GF when 24K turned up on a very warm day and hardly anyone sat on the eastern wing which is where most of the cameras were facing, so not a good look. These things need to be considered so it's the best spectacle it can be both live and on the TV.

Apparently 20K is the break even number required at Optus, mind you that was prior to the new deal being signed so they may well have dropped all their costings, but knowing this is venues west you can be assured someone will get screwed over in the end.

just no idea as to why it took so bloody long to just make the decision - last year was understandable given the restrictions and what was on us all , but this year apart from the typical Victorian chaos was going to be all clear due to the good work done by WA

My point exactly and forcing people to sit on cracked concrete in the outer at Freo Oval is assuredly not the way to maximise attendances.

Sorry all but I have to disagree. Nothing worse than an empty stadium and nothing better than a full stadium.  Very little  $$ (if any) will go to the clubs now. I prefer the neutral venue. 10,000 at Basso, SF, EF, Joond or Leederville would have been my preference over 10,000 at Optus.

Anyone know how much SF made through bars, venders and gates last year?
