I can vividly remember it was like a dream watching that 1st qtr 17 scoring shots to 1 can you believe....avalanche after avalanche of attacking forays after being given a brutal touch up in the 2nd Semi by EF, then the 2nd qtr and early into the 3rd qtr it was starting to turn into a nightmare before we regained our composure and kicked away to a 36 point win.
We were sitting at the 3 tier stand end were all the action was taking place in that 1st half too, it was a great era to be a Swans supporter.

Yep I was in the 3 tier stand too watching all the goals go over the umpires hat. At one stage Don Holmes kicked virtually identical goals in a matter of a few minutes and I was wondering whether people watching on TV might have thought they were watching a replay of the 1st goal when Don kicked the 2nd one!

Reckon that 1st Semi EF v SD at EF oval in 2014 when EF came home like a train with that 9 goal gale at their backs or the 2012 Prelim at Steel Blue where EF kept SD in the game with appalling goal kicking, yet won easily, would be up there for us EF fans for memorable recent EF v SD games...Think BOB kicked 2.7 from memory in 2012....do you remember them boys?....in 2014 the scragging/ducking tactics of McGough and ROB worked a treat keeping SD 3/4 lead to a minimum, think EF were in front by the ten minute mark of the final quarter, even though they were 6 odd goals down at 3/4 time.

BH, don't forget in that 1984 GF mate, the likes of Wrensted, Harding, Wilson, Sterrett, Brennan, Bennett et al were only very young and 2nd year players at best, with little or no finals, especially GF experience to draw upon...could be safe to say with SD on a three peat, the finals experience factor was definitely in SD favour....not to sure who any of those EF boys could of turned to for GF guidance, unlike those SD youngsters in Caton, Ahmat, Richardson and Outridge, who had a wealth of GF experience to confide in.

Interesting to note under Alexander, in every GF EF played, the opposition kicked a minimum of 6 goals in the opening stanza v EF....10 in 84, 6 in 85 and 7 in 86.....EF were good enough to get back into the first two games, but not the last....strangely enough that 86 side on paper was the best of the lot of them too. Looks like Alexander used physicality as a tactic....Never worked in any of the GF games...over used it in hindsight.

No love for the Round 1 1982 game Freeze? Big Ron's first in charge down at Old Easts.

That 2014 1st Semi was a bizarre game to say the least Freeze probably the only time I can ever remember in 40 years of going down there even playing on it a few times as well that the breeze was going to the Marmion St end of the ground and it turned into a hurricane in the last qtr as some sort of storm brewed up (not the EF one either)! To be honest though we did a reasonable job even making the finals that year after a big exodus of players and the media "experts" all to a man tipped us to finish last we were even on top for a short period mid season, but alas not be.

so this weekend would have seen the following games

Perth v EP
EF v WCE
Subi V Peel
C V SF
SD V WP

Perth have had many classic battles with East Perth, the same with Claremont and Souths (particularly in the 80s). Subi and Peel has pretty much been all one way ( apart from a few grand finals...) East Freo lost to West Coast in their two games last year so no happy memories there.

From a Swans v West Perth point of view, my mind immediately went back to the preliminary final of 2008 at Joondalup. Classic game of 2 halves. Swans were 27 points down at half time with Adam Campbell kicking goals from everywhere and West Perth had all the momentum. Then Mark Seaby who had been dominating the ruck to that point, failed to return after half time due to injury. A very young Nic Nat stepped up and Swans started to get their hands on the ball and gradually worked their way back into the game. In a see- saw last quarter we prevailed by 10 points and it was such an exciting finish. The nerves were nearly completely shot when a section of the crowd thought they heard the siren and stormed the ground. It took 5 minutes for umpires to clear the oval and resume the game.

That was a great train trip home

Certainly was a classic game Mike and what a comeback as we were 6 or 7 goals down at one stage and those interesting types in the WP members (the WP chanters) were giving it out to us SD supporters at the time right up until Swans hit the front in the last qtr and when the final siren sounded (the 2nd and final time) we turned around to find they had already left!

There were some great clashes in the 1980s between the 2 teams a record crowd at Basso in 1980 saw SD win by 20 goals.
A game at Leederville in 83 were we won by 3 points was a ripper.
The 1985 1st Semi saw the Sidey & Squizzy show put on a clinic kicking 15 goals between the in a team total of 24 majors.
A game at Leederville in 93 saw SD kick 3 goals late in time on in the last qtr to get up and win in a nailbiter.

As a neutral, the 1978 GF between Perth and East Perth was pretty memorable. Watched the whole game on Seans channel a few weeks ago. Amazing performance by the Buzz in a losing team.
The 1981 GF between Claremont and SF is another game that springs to mind readily. Pretty physical game as I remember it.

Work commitments kept me from that 2008 preliminary but it must have been an outstanding match. Three WP-Swans games stick with me – Maxie George’s goal after the siren at Leederville to win by a point in 1974 after Steve Gillespie (my favourite footballer) had made an awful mistake in defence; a year later when Peter Manning played a blinder in the middle in teeming rain at Bassendean and we won by over 100 points, and finally a strange game at Leederville in 1978. On paper the game in 1978 looks like a typical Leederville Oval hiding for Swans – we lost by 47 points. However, the last quarter was bizarre. I think West kicked the first three of the last to get out to 80 points, but then Swans kicked one, then another, and another, and another, etc. Sure, the heat had gone out of the game and Swans weren’t going to win, but Swans’ 7 in 9 minutes with another 7 minutes later left one pondering – at the time – why they couldn’t play football like that all the time. As history shows, it wasn’t too long after that they were playing startling football all the time…

I see this week our opponent was supposed to be SF at Fremantle Oval.
Some memorable games against SF have been the 1983 Prelim Final, 1990 Prelim Final, 2004 1st Semi Final all Played at Subi Oval and the 1983 clash at Bassendean Oval for Stephen Michael's 200th game where they put on the 'Stephen Michael Express' train from Fremantle station to Bassendean station (or was it Success Hill?) and back where all of the SF players caught the train up and back for TI's big milestone match including Mal's recently born baby son Campbell.

But as for games against SF at Fremantle Oval a game in 1982 where we put on a clinic in the first half so much so that SF coach Mal Brown made the SF players stay out on the ground at half time and do a training session in front of a bemused big crowd of spectators. It didnt really have the desired effect as SD still won easily that day.

Another game down at the Port that was quite memorable was in 2014 or 15 where SD I think were kept goalless for virtually 3 qtrs in the rain on an underwater mud pit down there but managed to kick 6 goals or so in the last to pip SF in a low scoring slog.

The 2008 1st Semi Final was also memorable as we just snuck into 4th spot thanks to a late goal by Nic Nat in the last round and went down there as rank underdogs with a team full of teenagers but managed to beat a strong SF side fairly comfortably this day before rolling WP at Joondalup the next week in an incredible Prelim to make the GF against the all conquering Subi.

Here is the match summary for that game in 2014

Daylight robbery. Souths can blame their absymal kicking, 21 scoring shots for 6-15, while Swans had 11 for 9-2.
