Mikeh by 1986 most of those Subi boys were 24/25/26 mate...in their footy prime....no different to that EF side of 81/82 that got smashed most weeks...yet they played in a GF 3 years on the trot from 84-86....no doubt SD before their 82/83/84 three peat...young players got to start somewhere I guess...

yes, the side was set up by Ken Armstrong

they also recruited for Bunton: Featherby, Willet, Sells, Floyyd and others, recruitting which never took place under Armstrong. Whom were his best recruits? Meirs, Valli?

Just as Smith's 73 team was set up by Bunton.

yep, happy to acknowledge both men in the lead up to the flags of 1973 and 1986, respectively. I think the players should acknowledge Armstrong more, the reason they don't, as you know Jack, is because they would have to explain 1982.

As I have said before in relation to Armstrong, his 1981 side, given its ability relative to the rest of the competition, achieved one of the best results in the history of the club to that time.

No love for Peter Daniel & Brian Fairclough AR?
The likes of Breman, Zanotti, Crutchfield, Wilkinson, Dawson, Leishman etc all got their WAFL start in 1983.

BH: even they would have appeared under Armstrong if he had of been re-appointed. I would have kept him for two more, giving him a five year term. After all they did this with Bunton in 1984. The mistake was appointing Daniel.

Armstrong struggled in 1982 because he

internal division
lost a few players
had a few injuries

Gee that Subiaco team from 1983 that got flogged by 140 points had some pretty decent players BH, some who played for the Eagles later. Mark Zanotti, Dwayne Lamb, Laurie Keene, Todd Breman, Warren Dean, Phil Lamb, Clint Brown and Greg Hutchinson.
Shows how things can turn quickly though as Subiaco won a flag 3 years later.

Only 2 years later they played in a GF and only just went under to Old Easts in that too Mike.
Leaving Basso that day you wouldnt have believed that in a million years as they looked a lost cause but just goes to show back then in the Golden Days Of WAFL footy things could be turned around quickly, not sure that is still the case though unfortunately!

Were the players upset he played his son AR?
I know Dennis Pagan had a similar reception at NM although Brian Fairclough did the same as well at Subi.

bease: 1983 -- was a strange year, you are right. Anyone whom had any ability at Subiaco was either playing colts or league -- the reserves had absolutely know depth, poor old Mick Malone as coach won one game. The following year, because, they had pushed up a lot of the young into the league, this, together with the recruitment under Bunton, meant that Loxley was able to win the reserves flag from fourth in 1984.

bease -- possiblly, which I would not have done
Armstrong was also a hard task master and some of them would have been tired of him.

I would not have liked to coach the Subiaco players at that time, I think they even gave Bunton a hard time in 1984.
