That wasn't the case Ark; Swans just continued doing what they'd done for three quarters but unfortunately Olsen wasn't on the end of one that would have seen him equal Maxie George's club record. I've said it before on this forum, but Olsen was the most capricious footballer I ever saw. And yes, one can rattle off records of goals kicked by forwards at the end of a match, but nothing in my opinion equals the performance I and others saw when he kicked nine in a half at Fremantle in 1978.

Just for the record, Geoff Christian gave Buckanara BOG in Monday's West in the 60 goal game, while it was Crain Hoyer - with the wobbliest of all flat-punts - who kicked Swans' 40th to the Bassendean end.

The recent SD v S game which springs to my mind was the fixture at Bogandean in 2018 where young Jack Mayo made his debut. We were 4 goals behind going into 3/4 time and kicked a goal right on the siren. We then piled 'em on in the last qtr to get over the line by a couple of goals. A great comeback victory.

I know he was bitter about being traded after almost winning the leading goal kicker the year before, but it was sad the way it finished for him. And yes in the end, EF got nothing for Melrose...

SH: great post -- Do you agree with Christian's analysis? The other thing I would say about that game is that, at the time Subi were in good form so to kick 40 goals for the first time and win by 20 goals, was a greater effort by SD then people realise. Just to highlight the point, I think we beat EP at Perth oval and narrowly lost to the 'monts' around this time.

South have been good to us over the years, here is a small collection-

1975-Record winning margin of 104 points which still stands today.
1987-Record winning margin of 210 points (normal competition rules).
1984-Drawn R1 after Ron Davis booted the final 2 goals of the game from seemingly hopeless angles.
2018-Prelim win after being flogged by 93 points a fortnight earlier.

In fairness to Olsen Freeze he was unfortunately badly injured on debut for EF in Round 1 1980.
He attempted to make a comeback the next season but obviously wasnt quite right still.
Melly himself had his career ended by injury in 1983 and missed that season's SD Premiership side after being the Simpson Medallist in the 82 GF.

According to the Sunday Times report of the game, Olsen had 11 goals at three quarter time, so he only added two in the last quarter.

Was it Melly who uttered those words after the 1982 GF "lets get another one of these bastards next year" ( bastards meaning premierships of course). History showed that they got another two of the bastards in a row!
