In fairness to Olsen Freeze he was unfortunately badly injured on debut for EF in Round 1 1980.
He attempted to make a comeback the next season but obviously wasnt quite right still.
Melly himself had his career ended by injury in 1983 and missed that season's SD Premiership side after being the Simpson Medallist in the 82 GF.

Was it Melly who uttered those words after the 1982 GF "lets get another one of these bastards next year" ( bastards meaning premierships of course). History showed that they got another two of the bastards in a row!

He certainly did utter those famous words on the dias that day Mike.
Have never ever forgotten the scenes after that drought breaking win that day-elation and mayhem not unlike 2010 come to think of it.

Remembered being totally gutted as a 12 yr old hearing Melly had signed with SD....he along with Bomber and Green were my initial all time faves back in 74 going to my first ever EF games....saying that I was excited hearing Olsen was coming over to EF...yeah the guy was very unlucky to go down in game 1....wasn't against SD to?....

1980 was definitely a hangover year for EF post flag in 79.....team looked decent on paper....think only Green and Turco left for the VFL....even then Green left mid season...81 was just as bad....probably even worse...thank fark for Subi back then....tho EF probably lost to them as well....LOL

EF did a great job on the back of three stars when available:

Peake
Melrose
Green

The rest were solid to good league footballers; this, also, partly explains why, the side was inconsistent in results.

ArkRoyal wrote: SH: great post -- Do you agree with Christian's analysis? The other thing I would say about that game is that, at the time Subi were in good form so to kick 40 goals for the first time and win by 20 goals, was a greater effort by SD then people realise. Just to highlight the point, I think we beat EP at Perth oval and narrowly lost to the 'monts' around this time.

At the time no. I remember thinking Williams as BOG...he kicked 5 or 6 as a rover, but in retrospect someone who is named in the centre and who kicks nine had to be best. One doesn't need reminding that this is an era where players stayed in their named positions, but Buckenara's bag from the middle and the fact that 60 majors were kicked highlights the fluid nature of the game but also Buckenara's great skill. Subi had Marshall, Randall, Hamilton, Schultz, Hall (in his long sleeves)... they weren't too bad on paper.

What is your opinion? Where you at the game?

That’s about all I got. Great start to 2019. Thanks to Ric, not sure why the WAFLsite isn’t showing historical fixtures and results.

SH-- no i have only read about it, just nine at the time. I think it was probably fair enough to make Buckenara best on the ground; as an alternative you would have to pick Olsen or one of the deserving SD mid field. I get the impression from reading about the game that, from Christian's point of view, the SD mid field may have taken votes off each other.

Interestingly, I once, heard Phil Lamb say he was in our best players, but had one of the Narkle lads kick for or five on him. I think he got a serve from peter burton.

Ark -Phil Lamb was a teacher at Morley High School. English teacher from memory. He never spoke about footy to the students.
There was also an East Perth player who played the other night in the 76 GF.Craig Daniels who liked to talk about his footy to the students. PE teacher.

gtr-- good one; imagine if he had of done so, he would have never have been able to hold a bloody class. My sister had Paul Mountain as a teacher, but she was not interested in football. Crutchfield was at my school for a semester in the mid 1980s, I managed to wag for an hour to speak to him a wee bit on one occasion.
