Yeah it was Derby 1st Semi, 20k was a so so mob for a derby final, but only 8k more turned up for the GF, the following year the WAFL charged back with nearly 40K at the GF and good H and A crowds as well, quite a few 5k plus attendances.

I think we can put the big 1989 Gf crowd down to South being there. I hope Sean and Ric show the 1988 1st semi final - the prelim was a horror show. My heart sunk when i saw they were showing it yesterday. It should carry an X rating - they should not be allowed to show it. It is the most painful moment for me following East Fremantle. We seemed to be sailing but alas, it was not meant to be. Who says it is only a game - not a true supporter that is for sure.

Yep, SF v Claremont , which was a re run of the last time they had meet in 81, with many star names still in the mix. The game was a horror for us though. Both Rioli and Edwards went in very under done with injuries.

The sf v c game before in the finals series was a cracker ,with mr magic really impressing.

It was a magic finals series, WP made an appearance with a drawn game, big crowds and lots of atmosphere,

You could see young Heady was going to be a star. Good comeback by old easts and then a good comeback from us, I guess we may have been lucky to win but what a great win it was! Poor crowd for a top match 13k. 83 WA v vic another cracker, Bucky killed them with 7, great performance. 79 dogs v ferals in the wet at freo, some great names in that classic. Pretty rare non finals full game from that time I'd say, 76-79 the era which I started following the WAFL closely. Thanks for that Sean and all!

Not sure if you saw the game from 1986 DG but how was the front on hit by CL's Peter 'Icepack' Owens on WP's 'Gorgeous' George Michalcyzk going back with with the flight with his eyes only on the footy!
It certainly lifted WP after that who came from 40 points down at that point in the last qtr with only 15 minutes left to get up to win by a kick.

Geez 1989 - still vividly remember Neesham & Rowland playing stop start & motionless kick to kick in the centre square with each other
That game was the first inklings of that horrible style of shit he conjured up for the Vicco league when he somehow got a coaching gig shortlived as it was
Ah 1989 the year of the big WCE collapse and the beginning of the end for WA state footy

For EFFC the 87 88 and 89 finals series were hugely disappointing. I think we had the cattle to have done better but perhaps the attitude was not quite right under the coaching of Graham Melrose. In hindsight we had got that appointment wrong and should of had Neesham (who had played at the club in 85 and 86) take over from big Ron.

In 1989 30000 attended a double header after the drawn 1st semi between us and WPFC. 16k against the Tigers the following week was respectable post eagles inception. 38K for the GF was huge. The following season the derby 1st semi attracted less than 16000 to Subi on a beautiful spring day. The 2nd semi between Swans and Tigers less than 13K - which was doubled for the replay in the GF that year. But of course West Coast had a great year in 1990 after getting rid of Toddy to make way for Malthouse from Footscray.

Sounds just like that years prelim - the 2 ex East Freo players seemed to rack up more disposals between them then our entire side.

Cracking match - but Claremont's Morton missed a sitter (from a free kick) in the dying moments from 20 metres out almost straight in front. Hilarious except for the fact it was West Perth.

What killed us that the WAFL kept changing the rules around player eligibility for finals.

Helped the other clubs rather than EF. Keene was a good example.

We had some darn good footballers but I will say S and Cl had some very fine athletes in their squads.

Anybody know what happened to Cooper after ’89? Thought he could have gone places.

Subi might of had Keene but we had Wrensted play for us in the ill fated 1988 Prelim. So for me that is not an excuse - i would blame poor kicking at goal before that. 36 scoring shots to 29 and we lose by 3 points. This does not include the out on the full's from shots at goal either. Sometimes you have to be able to close up shop - get numbers back, something else we failed to do. From memory we may have lost Shane Ellis at a crucial time in the last which would not have helped our cause.

Yeah that was some comeback alright Beas, not the first one I've seen from them unfortunately! As you know once they get a run on...
That was a big hit on George, I was reminded how good he was after watching him in the 79 game for the ferals and then in 86 in that game for joondy.
Court rucked well he was in good form and lost the big helmet too, he played better than I had ever seen him play for Subi
