DG, hope there wasn't a Dale Reeves named in the opposition magoos side mate.....bit of history between those two names.

No Freeze but he did play in 79 sf v ep game that was replayed last weekend. Solid bloke took a few good marks played quite well, obviously had his contacts in that day

Wow that 1983 Grand Final was a fantastic game of footy. The speed of ball movement and bumping and shirt fronts off the ball.
Swans just looked a little to good from 1\4.And held a lead of between 4 to 5 goals. In the 3rd qtr Claremont got within 11 points with goals to Blackwell.Ralph+60 punt from shorty Daniel's. Then Brett Farmer went over the top of his Swans defender, didn't quiet hold the mark.Toddy just knew how to shut down Claremonts star players.
That game was the last for Moss,Blackwell.Ralph...Baker.Nawotny,P Narkle. Both sides where still strong enough to playoff in a memorable 1984 preliminary final. On top of other losses to Victoria -Hunter,Solomon,Krakourer brothers..Beasley,Richardson, Holden,Hoyer.

As I keep telling my mates who are drunk on afl football GTR go back and watch those WAFL GF's and big games from the 1980s & late 70s as they were both faster & tougher than any games in the afl you would have seen of late and those guys all worked during the week and were essentially part time footballers!

BH I changed from mobile, tablet to tv.Didn't thing the speed of the game was that fast back then.I think it's because of the players skill levels with the one touch. If you fumbled like a few players did you where in all kind of trouble.Anyone who thinks a modern Wafl side would get within 12 goals of those teams is dreaming

A couple of observations of the match, 37 years on ( seems incredible, how quickly time goes by)

How good were the Swans defence that day led by Langsford, Skwirowski, Ware, Solin and Fogarty? To hold a star studded Claremont team to 12 goals on a fine day was an outstanding effort.

Brad Shine was one of the most fearless players I have ever seen and was a worthy winner of the Simpson Medal

Stan Nowotny was very influential when he came off the bench in his final game and particularly in the latter part of the 2nd quarter. He created some chaos in the Tigers back line which allowed Swans to kick some unanswered goals which proved to be the difference in the end.

Ron Boucher showed amazing courage to play and have an impact on the contest. He was struggling to do the lap of honour at the end of the match.

The Narkle brothers both demonstrated their dazzling skills during the periods of the game where it could have gone either way.

Both sides exerted a lot of pressure which created a lot of errors and turnovers. Luckily Swans made less mistakes under this pressure.
