gtr: on the 1978 grand final, I think EP did deserve to get there in view of their 26 scorring shots and they had the better side. As I say, from 1976-1980, the Royals under-achieved a lot, something finally typified, as you know, by their poor performance against your beloved black and whites in the preliminary final in 1980. A lot of this stuff is very interesting to think back on 40 years later.

The loss of Murry Cooper was a real blow for the Demons.Armstrong coach really well in that 78 GF to keep Perth in the match.Otway+John Maguire where running riot in the first half.He shut both players down after half time.He also moved key position players fwd then back to put out bushfires and get into the game. Then fwd again.
In 1980 EP thrashed Swans by 13 goals on a wet round 16 match at Perth Oval.In the prelim it was around 30 degrees on a big Subiaco oval.Swans 6 or 7 midfielders smashed EP 3 or 4 running through the middle of the ground.South+Claremont+Swans all had power midfielders rotating back then.

Another really high standard Grand Final in wet conditions. Between East Perth vs Perth the telecast last night was 1976.
Like 1978 there was no easy kicks out there.Unlike today's modern AFL game with floods and switching of play.Think footy looked better back then because players played in there position. Ken Armstrong did have a loose player in defense in the final qtr. With the Royals coming home with a strong breeze.
Gary Gibalini a player Perth recruited from East Fremantle. At the time it was a record transfer fee between Wafl clubs. Was excellent in that match and a fantastic recruit for the Demons.

GTR I would rather watch the pure footy from that era we all grew up watching and playing to the over coached, congested style of this century.
Despite them all being full time highly paid now the only thing that has improved in my opinion is the fitness as the skills certainly havent!
