gtr: I think your right in everything you wrote mate. As a Western Australian, the aim should have been to have as strong a local league as possible, as you have always said.
tm: yes, that is true: we can always point to giving your beloved blue and whites a good run in the finals. i remember round 7 of the season when EF thrashed us by 12 goals, putting Subi right back in its place.

Memorable moments against this weekends "opponent" 1 week 2 days ago #186847

Subi v East Perth

Claremont v Swans
West Perth v Perth

Was at that game against Claremont when they kicked one goal for the day, very memorable indeed.

Given the amount of times they touched up Swans over the years, was great to see, and was a very wet windy day. And yes was suited to a wet windy hard day of footy.

Memories folks? From Swans point of view can't go past the 4 grand final wins, 2010 would be a close winner given that it was so unexpected but they were all special. As for home and away games I recall a draw at Bassendean in 2010 and a wonderful game in round 21 1981 at Claremont which we actually lost but both teams scored over 20 goals. I will never forget the wizardy of the Krackouer Brothers on that day.

Yeah those games in 1981 between SD vs CL were very memorable Mike despite being on the losing end, some massive crowds, big scores, electric footy.
Was it the next year in 1982 Steve Malaxos was given a goal (when clearly a point) at Basso that CL ended up winning by a couple of points? I do remember the goal umpire being given some optical advice amongst others on his way from the ground.
A game in 1984 at Subiaco Oval (not the Prelim Final) was also memorable watching Brent Hutton put on an aerial masterclass on his way to kicking 11.4.
There was a game late in 1990 at Claremont Oval that we ended winning late in the game that probably gave us the confidence to knock them off in the GF a few weeks later.
Round 1 the next year at Basso was another clinker where Dale Kickett got reported for head butting Shane Atherton (possibly on debut) SD got up by a kick and CL I dont think lost another game that whole year?
The 2010 draw at Basso was a classic game that was a virtual preview of the GF later that season.
And last but not least a game at Claremont Oval in 1996 where we kept the Tigers to a solitary goal on a very wet winters day, Dwayne Griffin was superb in those conditions and had a few Tigers looking sideways and backwards that day!

Great Games 1 week 2 days ago #186849

as a kid i remember going to the 1996 GF, was a cracker. Claremont by 2 points over East Perth. Todd Ridley starred kicked a bag and won a Simpson i think. Was a big blue as well. I vividly remember Chris Lewis was playing. East Perth had a fair team and so did Claremont.

Big crowd of about 30K.

Great game.
2010 GF obvioulsy an amazing game, liked the result as well.

Couple of finals in the 2000/10s between East Perth and Swans at Bassendean were memorable for the crowd (8K) and atmosphere which felt like a throwback to previous years.

Seen quite a few crackers over the years but the 1979 Fremantle Oval Derby where 23000 of us crammed in might be the best I've seen but to be frank it's close with quite a few others

We kicked ourselves out of it at least 7 or 8 times during the game and fell nearly 4 goals down early in the last quarter when Jimmy Sewell kicked a goal but we got on a big roll and finished with 20.30 from memory & Old Easts as they were then known 20.15

So many outstanding players. No defensive zones. Just entertaining end to end footy with heaps of one on one contests. Nirvana! Trying to spot myself in the crowd at the Subiaco end. Fat chance!

That was a wonderful game of Wafl footy Mike. Will always be remembered for the torrential rain in the last qtr..Armstrong's coaching was excellent that day..EP where in front all game and his moves along with Buzz almost got them over the line.

According to WA Footy Facts it was a Monday - crowd 34,500. It was a very good match indeed - as you would expect from an interstate clash. Like in 1984 when Rob Wiley scored a behind on the siren to give WA the win at Football Park it was quite a hostile crowd. I noticed WA returned to Adelaide in 1978 and pumped SA on a Saturday in July by 11 goals. An even larger crowd had the pleasure of witnessing WA pile on 18 2nd half goals after trailing SA by 3 points at the main break - with Graham Moss booting 7 for the game.

I noticed Doug Green received plenty of advice from the crowd. David Hollins was the other East Freo representative.
