Massive news on the eve of the 2016 WAAFL season!

Below is the transcript of a memo from WAAFL General Manager, David Armstrong


The WAAFL has a responsibility to ensure the competitions administered by it are played in
accordance with the rules of Australian football and the spirit of the game. The WAAFL will continue to seek to ensure that, to the greatest extent possible, all players playing in competitions administered by the WAAFL are subjected to physical contact only to the extent contemplated in the rules of Australian football.

The WAAFL considered the number of red and yellow cards given to players of the Kelmscott
Senior Football Club (Kelmscott) in the 2015 season unacceptable. Two incidents are subject to criminal proceedings.

In September 2015 the WAAFL Board requested a meeting with Kelmscott representatives to
discuss strategies to improve player behaviour for 2016. Kelmscott declined to meet. In
November 2015, Kelmscott was requested to submit a written plan of action describing the steps which have been taken and which will be taken by its administrators, coaches, players and members to achieve the objective of fewer red and yellow cards in 2016.

The Club’s team nominations for 2016 were subject to several conditions including a written player management plan signed by the Club’s coaches and at least two duly authorised officers of the Club being submitted and approved by the WAAFL.

The WAAFL met Kelmscott’s A-Grade Coach and a representative 8 March 2016.

As Kelmscott has failed to comply with all conditions required for its team nominations to be accepted for the 2016 season, the WAAFL can no longer consider Kelmscott teams within the fixtures until such time as a written player management plan is submitted and approved by the WAAFL.

Opposing teams when fixtured to play Kelmscott and Kelmscott does not play will be awarded the win and shall receive 4 premiership points and be credited with 90 points scored.

The WAAFL has provided every opportunity for Kelmscott to submit this plan which unfortunately has resulted in this late advice.

The written player management plan required of Kelmscott is not onerous and is vital in order for the WAAFL to be satisfied as to its duty of care, which the WAAFL owes to every player that takes a field under the WAAFL’s control.

Reading the statement, looks like the management of kelmscott have just stuck their head in the sand. Players and supporters have been totally let down.

A massive decision by the waafl but one that is completely justified after what this club has done Over the last 2 years

It will be interesting to see how Kelmscott recover from this. Do they stay in the Amateurs next year? If they do, what grade will they be demoted to in 2017?
I dont get why the opposing club gets the points. Why not just fixture it as a bye? Also, why leave it until the eve of the opening game? It should have been done at least a month or two ago.
For the record, I've followed Armadale since 1980. Sad to see this happen to a former Sunday club.
