Dwert, I think you'll find most people agree with the concept of an Indigenous Voice to federal parliament but why does it need to go into the Constitution? It could be legislated which would allow changes if it doesn't work rather than putting something in that is there for good regardless of the efficacy.

I've seen arguments that future governments could repeal any legislation but given the broad acceptance in the community, it would be a very brave or stupid government indeed that would dismantle it completely. That is not to say it couldn't go into the Constitution after a period if it is effective and makes a difference, but to have something like this enshrined when we don't know how or if it's going to work doesn't make a lot of sense.

Spot on BC - no issue with the original proposal of recognition in some form in the Const. If you remember back Abbott was working a long way towards this and even most Conservative voters were on board, a working group was formed to start the process going long before the Uluru Ayers Rock Statement was released, however the entire thing got blown up when they suddenly came back wanting the Third Chamber idea which was seen by just about everyone as a step too far, particularly more lefty Malcolm T who sensibly shut down the entire knowing it would be doomed at a Ref, ( mysteriously now that he is out of power says he has now changed his mind - typical Turnbull really its more about attacking the Libs that logic).

Make matters worse, Albo and the Yes crew decided against best advice giving people the option of voting for one and not the other and having two questions, one for recognition and one for "the voice". Most would have voted for recognition. Then he included The Executive, the original statement remit was only supposed to be The Parliament, that was when he got railroaded by Langdon and Co.

What don't you understand about it being only an Advisory body? That the Govt of the day can take or leave?
Most of the Aboriginal population agree with this proposal - 80%

And that's different to the dozen other indigenous advisory group how? Another layer of red tape isnt going to fix any problems.

It's an advisory body as you say, but it still has the right to go to the High Court if it doesn't believe the government of the day has given its recommendations enough consideration. That could and would stop proposed legislation in its tracks and see the wheels of government slowing grind to a halt in extreme circumstances.

Also, can you tell me who will decide which pieces of legislation the Voice makes recommendations on as virtually all acts of parliament impact on us all including indigenous people?

The mechanics of the Voice structure will be determined by Federal Parliament, both sides! Surely we should expect the same rights for Aboriginal Australians that we afford to other Australians
