People were not unpaid, they got to live on stations free of charge were provided with tucker, and everything else they needed were free to hunt and live traditional lives with full extended families as well they had full time work on the station as great stockman, wages were paid to state government who in turn paid them allowances and vouchers, this was to avoid money being blown on sly grog and so on and ensured kids were looked after. 

Everything farked up when the do gooders thought it was a good idea to end that scheme, about 1971 or so, all the mobs got moved off the stations of their lands and into towns and houses and lost most of the jobs, proud stockman soon became town drunks and it has been a tale of misery every since , as any of the old timers and they will tell you they look back on those days as the golden years.

The do gooders go from one train wreck to the next - plenty more tax payers cash being chucked about to who knows who now, one big rort, as pretty much everyone from that era is dead...ridiculous.

Wow, and the sad thing is Ozfooty is probably the only place you could say it without being shut down. Wouldn’t it be great if the tax payer funded ABC or SBS would do an interview with you and survivors of this era. You wouldn’t get past hello. Spot on, I remember it well as I was living and working in the Kimberleys at the time this started to happen.  My parents were friends with a couple of station owners who told them they had no choice.
I bought this up on the old footygoss site many years ago and was called a racist and slave trader.  My, how our thoughts do change.

Yeah, just not viable to pay a heap of stockman a full wage, plus accommodate the extended family with everything that went with that. Stuffed the entire set up.
