It's an advisory body as you say, but it still has the right to go to the High Court if it doesn't believe the government of the day has given its recommendations enough consideration. That could and would stop proposed legislation in its tracks and see the wheels of government slowing grind to a halt in extreme circumstances.

Also, can you tell me who will decide which pieces of legislation the Voice makes recommendations on as virtually all acts of parliament impact on us all including indigenous people?

The mechanics of the Voice structure will be determined by Federal Parliament, both sides! Surely we should expect the same rights for Aboriginal Australians that we afford to other Australians

Under the current Constitution Indigenous people do have the same rights as everyone else.  Under the new proposal, you will have more because of your race.  How is that fair and equatable?  So do you buy a new car without looking under the bonnet and taking it for a test drive because that's what you're asking everyone to do?

I think we can agree to disagree Dwert but unfortunately for you, current polls show around 53% will vote No. That could change but I don't think it will be the end of a Voice to federal parliament even if the question is defeated, as it wouldn't surprise one little bit if it gets legislated first as it should.

I think it was Bazza who said the referendum should have two questions. One on whether First Nations people should be recognised in the Constitution on which I would vote Yes...and whether there should be an Indigenous Voice to parliament on which I'd vote No as we don't know what it will look like.

Yep current polls are not looking good , but still another four weeks until Referendum, one can only remain hopeful that fair minded Australians do their research and make an informed decision. Appreciate the respectful dialogue...

Yep It was me, the other thing is this referendum should be held at the next election as most are, the cost of running this dud as a stand alone is astronomical not to mention the huge spend of tax dollars to push the yes vote.

Howard held both questions twenty years ago. I would still vote 'no' to both today. The ALP has simply replaced the 'republican' of Howard's time with this rubbish. Try to avoid being conned by both Albo and Dutton. There was no 'European land tenure', full stop. I might agree to some recognition of them in a preamble if they pledge loyalty to the 'crown' in addition. There is no point in empowering a disloyal minority, be they activists or Aboriginals.

What do you mean "European land tenure" Ark?

Well people have done their research and will make an informed decision - which is No.
Also im curious about who would be voted onto the voice committee?  They claim it will be a vote by indigenous people - how do you control that?  If you 1/16th aboriginal do you get a full vote or just 1/16th of one?  Just another reality they haven't tought through or dont have any detail on.

As BC and others have said there should have been the 2 separate questions, not linking one with the other.
I think fair minded Australians are trying to make an informed decision but Albo and the Yes side wont provide us with sufficient details to make an informed decision to vote yes, they want to use the old used car salesman approach of "trust me".

In the absence of that detailed information it leaves many and most likely the majority to make the reasoned and reasonable decision not support the yes case. If Albo and the yes side lose this ref they only have themselves to blame.

Labor have dropped the ball on the Voice.
2 separate questions should have been asked, which I think most people would support recognition of First Nations people in the constitution.

Bundling in the Voice to parliament being added to the constitution, with no detail provided on how  it will operate has most people questioning Albo and other politicians taking the ‘just trust us’ position.

Australians don’t trust politicians and they’ve given us plenty of reason not too. Historically National referendums fail with less than 20% of the previous 44 being supported. Don’t see that trend changing, especially given how the proposal has been written as an all or nothing outcome.
