For those with very long memories think back to 1964 when Cl had to beat WP in the final game to make the 4, they did so in front of a massive crowd at Leederville, then ran through all the others to win the flag. But they have 2 massive games against Bogundean & Joondy. If they get past SD rest assured Joondy wont be taking their foot off as they wouldn't want to drop to 3rd with the possibility of playing the qual final down at centrelink paddock. Peelmantle have 2 very winnable % boosting games against Perth & SF.

Fantastic finale to the season and a shame we cant see the CL SD game on the box .... unbelievable.

SS in 1964 was that the day John Vukman from WP missed a goal 5m out in the dying seconds which would have won the game for WP and 4th spot? I think I read a story about that - perhaps one of Oos stories. Also in 1963 as well as 1964 and 1965 the 4th placed sides won the flag and this hasn't been achieved since, and since 1960 only 4 times has a side won from 3rd - EF in 1979, SD in 1983, EP 2001, 1993 Claremont - (but top 5 system so had double chance) So history suggests that anyone below top 2 has no chance but with this being one of the closest seasons in memory where most of the year only % and maybe a game separated 2nd from 7th it could be another year it can occur. I can only hope..The John Vukman story is fascinating though as you cant cut it much finer than that! Claremont must have given him an honorary life membership if the story is true

SD that rings a bell re Vukman, it was a sensational game and the Monts were so pumped up and confident after the win they steamed through the finals. Jimmy Conway was their coach I think and was a super positive character and had them flying high after "stealing" that finals berth. The 60's threw up some amazing finals. 65' I think it was where EF kicked 9 goals into the breeze in the last qtr to pinch the flag off Claremont?

Going off topic a bit here but just a final word on that 64 flag. We were coming off a spoon in 63 and had to win the last four games I think to make the four. The grand final ended in controversial circumstances with a mark that wasn't paid to bob Johnson of old easts (I think). Haven't heard the Vukman story before so I'm not sure about that one.
On this weeks game I will be interested to see if Seaby is selected again this week, was hobbling against East freo last week from the start and was pretty useless really.

I remember John Vukman on the old ABC footy panel of a Saturday Night showing the highlights from that days games back in the EARLY 80's ...and still many at the current WAFC believe the ABC only covered WAFL footy from 1988-2014????

To beat Claremont, Swans will have to:

1. Negate their big man strength, especially Maister who killed us last time
2. Minimise the influence of Richardson and Bradshaw who always seem to pop up and do some damage against Swans
3. Provide them with zero space and put on a tackling performance similar to that against Subiaco 2 weeks ago
4. Hit targets in the forward 50 rather than just bombing it like they often did last week.

To make percentage a factor in the finals race Swans would have to have at least a 7 or 8 goal win but the chances are its going to be a nail biter decided by less than a goal if the last 3 games at Bassendean are any indication. Don't know if I can stand too many more of these heart stoppers :S

you forgot number 5 Mikeh

5. Need to play 4 quarters of footy

though not too sure if that is possible considering very few teams ever do.

by not necessarily good quarters DW, do you mean "lazy footy".....can think of one WAFL side in particular who is guilty for doing that :P.... and they don't wear black and white!! :pinch:

Around a ten or eleven goal win I think Mike in order just to get square on percentage. Perhaps a twelve to fifteen goal win required if Claremont can narrowly defeat WP next week. I'm very tempted to attend this match.

Larry I'm sure you would have a great day if you came to Bassendean on Saturday. It will be a very tense affair and from a neutral perspective will be an enjoyable game to watch I would imagine. I think the talk about percentage is probably irrelevant because I can't really see Swans winning by that sort of margin over the Tiggers given their record of games that have gone down to the wire this year. For Swans it will be a matter of win this game and then become West Perth supporters for a day next week......
