Top Attendance Since the AFL Era

South Femantle v Claremont 1989 38 193

Swans have not featured in any of them.

but SOUTH have in ALL!

When South played in 1989 over 38, 000 turned up , that record has never come close to being beaten in the post AFL WAFL, the very next year when swans played just 26,000 turned up, not even close.

I think the top post AFL era attendances have been
89 SF v C 38, 193
93 C v WP 32 404
97 SF v EF 32 371

Sorry guys the FACTS just don't bear out the myth of the black and white army.

Bazza - lies, damn lies and statistics. Please name the top 5 attended GFs prior to 1987. With respect to the post 1986 era since we have played in three Grand Finals where our oppenents have been Claremont (twice) and Subiaco it is perfectly understandable why we would not feature in the top attended GFs in that era. However, I believe that the Swans Claremont GF of 2010 was the best attended for a significant period.

I know one thing when we play SD at Joondalup we always have a big turnout. Good to see.. And Basso speaks for itself. They certainly have a great setup there and brings in the crowds.. Attendance? Depends on who they are playing..
Brett wants to dump the EP v WP Derby on Anzac day in favour of WP v SD game..
The new Derby next year will have to be WP V Perth. Perth have a pretty good following.
Now in this game on Saturday I have a feeling there will be a nice crowd (EP aside whose supporters have dropped off) Have heard a lot of neutrals saying they will be going.
Just look for Grassy near the canteen under the grandstand..

East Perth IMO can play there own little Eagles reserves game :( Will be interesting to see how many turn up at Peel and EP games. I suspect they will feature in the lower crowd figures. :(

What lies are there? None.

Mate your argument re claremont and attendances holds NO water, in 1989 south played claremont..and set the post AFL record so whats your point...?? the next year 12,000 less people turned up at your game...piss poor. any more excuses??

Also what on earth has the top 5 got to do with it - I think swans get in about 4th or 5th maybe - big deal - your not even close to the top two attendances. in pre or post eagles eras.

mate the way it will evolve is like this

the traditional derbies will fade fast

Dockers v Eagles will be the big crowd pull in future years

SF v EF will be of historic but fading importance once the dockers WAFL team take the spot light

Interesting Brett has already decided to move away from the EP v WP derby, moving with the times I guess. Good move going forward.

Whilst West Perth was the team I disliked the most pre-Eagles it is good to see that some people value the WAFL competition and its proud and long history. It is up to those who value the WAFL competition to stand up to the devils incarnate.

Getting back to Ch9 broadcasting the footy ostensibly at the WACA. How will the WAFL clubs be compensated for the loss of revenue resulting from this?

Also, a hypothetical: what should we do if the devils incarnate, Eagles and Dockers, propose to play matches involving the club formerly known as East Perth as a preliminary game to the Eagles and similarly the Dockers and Peel?

The Scheduled games at the WACA would have to include a cash compensation package for ginving up home games for the clubs that agree to do so.

The fact is the relevant club sponsors want as much exposure as they can, so if South or Swans can run out on the WACA with their sponsors logo splashed all over commercial TV then marketingwise that will win over.

If the WACA WAFC and clubs can agree to share the gate, chuck a grand or two to the WAFL club to cover bar takings then it cant be that hard surely.

Next year the sponsors wil be back offering more to get exposure on commercial TV.

I am not sure how you think a grand or two will compensate for the loss of revenue by playing games at the WACA. Assuming that no more paying customers will attend the WACA games, and I suspect that there would be fewer paying patrons as you would eliminate the attendees who are WACA members from those paying, you would have to pay some money to the WACA for using their ground. So potentially you have less gate receipts which is further reduced by a payment to the WACA.

Also, it seems to me that the assumption that sponsors would be more inclined to pay more because it will be on one of channel 9's digital channels rather than on the ABC is misguided and not realistic.

The WA Football Commission is back in talks with the ABC on telecasts for WAFL matches in 2014 after being unable to find a sponsor to allow Channel 9 to telecast matches.

WAFC chairman Frank Cooper confirmed fresh talks with the ABC yesterday, saying the current tight economic climate had made it difficult to make up a $1 million shortfall in costs for the venture, which would have had cameras based at one ground - possibly the WACA where Channel 9 has equipment in place for cricket telecasts - with one match every weekend to be telecast live to the WA audience.

But the arrangement would still have required the WAFC to cover the production costs. Finding commercial support for that had been tough, Cooper said.

"For 2014 we are up against a time frame realistically," he said.

"If some benevolent sponsor turned up tomorrow we might be able to work some miracle."

The ABC has been the traditional telecaster of WAFL football, taking the game to audiences in the metropolitan and regional areas of the State, but was due to cease its coverage of the historic competition next year to pursue other sports.

Which other sports would that be?

Rugby league, Union, Bowls, Soccer, Basketball possibles ABC wont do it for nothing so they will have to pay or have a sponser.
I would like them to stay with WAFL for the coverage,Iview,Highlights etc on the net.
