jardine wrote: anchorman, i havent been to the WACA for a long time. i was under the impresison the venue had removed thousands of seats and replaced them with grassed banks. i guess that would make it very attractive for wafl supporters, unlike the previous arrangement 18 years ago.

perhaps they will play neutral games there like they did with subiaco oval in the 80's

just a thought but the WACA's capacity it barely 20000 these days. would that be a better venue for grand finals rather than subiaco oval that looks empty of GF day? and its only a matter of time before subi gets the bulldozers i think. considering burswood and all.

Perth moved back to the WACA in the late 80's for a few years, I actually think it was a pretty good venue, at the time I was a WACA memember and it was great, they hosted a few night WAFL games which worked really well, I remember watching Stnga Rea having a big night there. I have no idea why theu moved back to Lathlain as the WACA seemed pretty good.

They hosted a few doubleheaders there as well I think east perth played in most of them.

reckon it would work well perhaps perth might move back there. the lights are great,

back then you still got 3000 - 4000 at WAFL on a regualr basis, I reckon the night games pulled 5000 back then.

I think they are redeveloping the area a round the WACA as well with apartments so just a chance that they may drag a few more people in to watch.

yeah I agree the WACA would be an ideal WAFL finals venue, Subi looks woefull now come finals, just too empty.

I reckon the WACA needs every buck they can get as its basically empty for months on end, rekon they would be right in it as a WAFL venue.

yes it could work if people think about it rationally. and the lighting is probably the best in the world. it is an under utilized venue.

i do remember going to a double header there years ago. i went because my son was playing little league i think and we watched perth/souths and im sure it was westperth/clare. there was a good 10,000 there and a great atmosphere.

Agree I loved going to WAFL at WACA.. Great ambience and the lights were good. Great facilities.. Just all round great. Never thought of the WACA membership comming into it so if your a member you get in for free. The WACA would like that as would the cricket supporters who would get a great deal.

Central and parking not bad but then you have Public Transport in the city. Would most probably get a good crowd on Friday night as a lot of city workers would be able to walk down or catch the free bus but you could catch a train into the city anyway.
Used to go to the cricket a lot and we would start and finish at the Carlton hotel up the road.. Wonder if that is still going but then you have the Grovenor if thats still there.. Yeh just going off on a tangent. :) Just looking at the after game drinks.

I thought after the WACA was redeveloped a few years ago it was now too small for football. They have filled in the ends with grassed seating areas. It could be too short now for a footy field.

the WACA is exactly the same length as the SCG (149 metres) and 3 metres wider.

the WACA also is only 7 metres shorter than the GABBA.

given afl football is played at these venues based on these sizes, wafl could definently still be played there, despite the reduction in size. it might be exciting watching players take pot-shots from the centre square like they do at the SCG

also, the WACA is 11 metres wider than Etihad in melbourne.

The other thing is if WA gets its Rugby side which it will as huge following here will they play at the WACA? Will it be their home ground or will they use Perth oval or even the New stadium?

cardy im certain my previously beloved perth oval now holds 25,000 and is custom designed as a rugby/soccer venue.

no chance of them playing at the waca ever. therefore its a good fit for the wafl.

Yeh i remember being at that double header, from memory the maggots went on strike and we had the liked of Ron Alexander and Greg Brehaut umpiring.. I heard somewhere the waca was looking at lengthening the oval a bit to accomadate WAFL it wouldnt be too hard as its only grass banks behind the goals anyway..i was there the day the great Kevin Caton booted 10 for the mighty black and whites! , and i have a WP v Clare at the waca on DVD from 87
