Basso capacity 22,000, is that still the legal capacity? Probably not more like 17,000.

22,000 would be incredible there.
With respect to the capacity of Basso now, I think a crowd of 20,000 would be possible. Some porta-loos would probably be needed stationed toward the Basso gates end of the ground etc.  It would make for wonderful tv viewing to see the ground filled to capacity.

The WAFL GF should always be played at the premier football venue in WA- (Perth Stadium or a redeveloped WACA) as is the case in SA/SANFL- (Adelaide Oval) and VIC/VFL- (Docklands).

Ok last year was hopefully a one off with playing only a third of a proper season then having the Finals played at Fremantle but playing at a dilapidated suburban venue or similar long term is demeaning to our 136yo WAFL- the Premier State based Sporting Competition in WA and it deserves more prestige than that....we might as well then be the Amateurs!

A GF up at Basso would be absolutley awesome, I'd come up just to experience the atmosphere even if SF werent in it, especially if Swans were in it, it would be magic, a train up a few at the Basso Hotel before and after and a packed local ground. I certainly wouldnt bother doing that at Optus.
Bazza going down memory lane, were you a passenger on the S Michael train from Freo to Success Hill?

Yes, i recall that day, in fact success hill station was put in especially to service Bassenden oval.

yet another reason it could be a could finals venue.

20,000 there would be just incredible and an atmosphere would be terrific, vastly superior to a sea of empty plastic seats in a concrete bunker.

Imagine a Grand Final with a ground and atmosphere like this.

Thanks for the walk down memory lane Bazza.  What a pleasure to not see 36 players running after the ball all the time.  No kicking the ball backwards and players having the courage and confidence in their teammates to kick to a marking contest.  Ruckmen who can actually ruck and not just wrestle.  I could go on but I think most will get the gist.

PS Dodgy umpiring decision by Dave Johnson.

No problem , but my focus was primarly on the ground and spectacle as a future vision of WAFL GF.

the sad thing is we have now had decades of playing in empty grounds people tend to accept it as the norm.

But Freo oval in its proposed new format wont have a decent capacity, imagine SD v Pth in a GF (unlikely at the moment I know) but there would be easily 20k plus fighting for tickets. Play it at Optus and be done with it. Now that Subi look like they are back with the pack the GF no longer looks like a forgone conclusion, looks more attractive to more people.

The WAFL banked $250,000 for the day, as opposed to a 150,000k loss at Optus for the second year running.

As this stage based on those figures alone it wont ge going back to Optus anytime soon.
The WAFC should collectively get off their chairs and actually earn some of their salary and consult with the state government.  Negotiate with the government to ensure that in the worst case scenario the GF is played at the new stadium at no loss to the WAFL.  The WAFL GF will be the pinnacle of many footy players' careers and they should be able to have that experience at the new stadium.

even if they did do that, it doesnt make up for the PROFIT made by the clubs, so unless McGowan is happy to write a cheque out for $45K each to particpating clubs on the day - plus cover the loss - no thanks. thats a $400K turn around

I did say worst case scenario.  It would be up to the WAFC negotiating skills with the state government and advertising to maximise the size of the crowd and revenue.  And of course one would hope the WAFC would understand the benefit of getting a multi-year agreement.

Let me make myself clear that in my opinion the WAFL GF should be played at the new stadium.

That is why a revamped WACA with a capacity of 10,000 should NEVER be considered as the venue for the WAFL GF.

dont follow your logic there, while I agree a 10K capacity is to small one this is certain it wont be empty at 10K
