I do miss the Subiaco Oval Septembers already but I'm realising Septembers are going to be played elsewhere now - so a revamped Fremantle Oval with modernised and even increased facilities for everyone becomes valuable and worthwhile
Can envision something quite special if it gets together properly

Yes, the big days at Subi were special and in the big days we packed it out, but as you say thats the past, we haven't packed a GF out for decades and we abandoned semis at bigger grounds a while back. its time for the WAFL to find a new long term finals venue that fit for purpose and for the comp and where its at in the public pulling power, 50,000 people wont ever be going to a WAFL GF again.

I guess if the WAFC is happy to play a GF at Freo Oval with the disgraceful concrete tiering in full view then optics is not high on their list of priorities.

Must be confused BC , the entire area was covered in people, no concrete to be seen and actually looked great on tele , as opposed to the usual sea of empty plastic seats at subi or optus.
Mate...please take your red and white glasses off.  It looked shite on tv with no shade, no seating, people perched on concrete steps with dirt and rubble in the background.  FMD, it looked like a poor country ground not the premier footy event of the state's highest footy league.
Perhaps someone can confirm whether this is accurate.  I was under the impression that seats were not allowed to be brought into Freo Oval for the GF.  If it was true, I presume that was a decision made by the WAFC rather than South Freo FC.

The WAFC insisted that seats could not be used in the members stand as it was a neutral venue, which is utterly bizarre given Subi had the luxury of watching their own team in GF from their own members seats for decades ( if they made it)

WAFC had total control of the venue for the day. I don't think they had any plans to install additional seats due to costs. Piad dividends as well with each club banking some healthy cash for the day as opposed to leaving with pockets like elephant ears from Optus.

Spot on BC.
It may as well have been an F Grade Amateurs GF being played as it was such a poor look at a run down suburban venue.

Basso should have a crack at getting the GF this year, imagine a packed out Basso, 15,000 plus on the banks it would look like the old days and awesome on TV even more so if Swans made it,

btw what ever happened to the much vaunted Basso redevelpment?

The WAFL GF should always be played at the premier football venue in WA- (Perth Stadium or a redeveloped WACA) as is the case in SA/SANFL- (Adelaide Oval) and VIC/VFL- (Docklands).

Ok last year was hopefully a one off with playing only a third of a proper season then having the Finals played at Fremantle but playing at a dilapidated suburban venue or similar long term is demeaning to our 136yo WAFL- the Premier State based Sporting Competition in WA and it deserves more prestige than that....we might as well then be the Amateurs!

A GF up at Basso would be absolutley awesome, I'd come up just to experience the atmosphere even if SF werent in it, especially if Swans were in it, it would be magic, a train up a few at the Basso Hotel before and after and a packed local ground. I certainly wouldnt bother doing that at Optus.

Basso capacity 22,000, is that still the legal capacity? Probably not more like 17,000.

22,000 would be incredible there.

But Freo oval in its proposed new format wont have a decent capacity, imagine SD v Pth in a GF (unlikely at the moment I know) but there would be easily 20k plus fighting for tickets. Play it at Optus and be done with it. Now that Subi look like they are back with the pack the GF no longer looks like a forgone conclusion, looks more attractive to more people.

The WAFL banked $250,000 for the day, as opposed to a 150,000k loss at Optus for the second year running.

As this stage based on those figures alone it wont ge going back to Optus anytime soon.
The WAFC should collectively get off their chairs and actually earn some of their salary and consult with the state government.  Negotiate with the government to ensure that in the worst case scenario the GF is played at the new stadium at no loss to the WAFL.  The WAFL GF will be the pinnacle of many footy players' careers and they should be able to have that experience at the new stadium.

Thanks for the response Bazza.  I was actually referring to whether people were able to bring their own portable seats to sit on them on the outer wing.  My impression was that was not allowed.

Thanks for the walk down memory lane Bazza.  What a pleasure to not see 36 players running after the ball all the time.  No kicking the ball backwards and players having the courage and confidence in their teammates to kick to a marking contest.  Ruckmen who can actually ruck and not just wrestle.  I could go on but I think most will get the gist.

PS Dodgy umpiring decision by Dave Johnson.
