Tiger of old wrote: Remove the WAFL and have players drafted from school, amateurs or country footy, how ridiculous. You can’t have players going from an amateur level straight into AFL clubs, how could anybody think that is good for the game. You “amateursomniacs” may hate the WAFL but it is an important part of football in this country, along with all levels of the game. The real villain is the AFL which has way too many teams and consumes way too much of the finances.

BH - they have to bag the WAFL as their master is the WAFC and who controls the WAFC - the AFL clubs.

Sheesh some havent got a clue on here MO!
Draftees can only be taken via the State Leagues (semi professional), Nab League (Former TAC Cup) the National State 18s (Former Teal Cup) who are affiliated to the 2nd tier State Leagues- WAFL, SANFL, VFL, TFL & NEAFL (QAFL, NSWAFL, ACTAFL & NTFL) clubs. The 4 x QLD & NSW teams also have their respective academies. You also have the Category A or B rookies who are either from International or have played another sport in the proceeding draft years.

There is a very good reason why that is as TOO posted you cannot possibly believe a player could be drafted straight to the AFL from amateurs or country comps, the step up in intensity, demands, professionalism, preparation etc is so stark it is ridiculous, it would take them 3 pre seasons just to even catch up to the rest of the squad who have come through a regulated pathway and with draft numbers to be reduced and employees (coaches, development, fitness etc) at clubs also now reduced with the football dept soft cap lowered by 30%, no afl club in their right mind is going to take a speculative punt on a guy who is not physically or mentally ready or prepared after playing in amateur comps!
WAFL clubs train 3 or 4 nights a week plus Sunday morning recovery not too mention at least 4 months of pre season training to at least simulate and prepare the sort of training requirements those good enough to be drafted could expect to face when in the afl system!

TT is probably thinkin old the old days when players like Steve McCann and Brian Taylor were plucked from down Bunbury way as 16 year olds and I think ex West Aussie Mark Mclure who grew up in Manning (gee wouldn't he have been handy in a Demons jumper with the Buzz jumping over his shoulders), eventually ended up getting plucked out of some Sydney comp in the 70's when his old man got transferred there for work.
Get on your bike.
It was Adam and Eve not Adam and Steve.

DD McCann (Geraldton) & Taylor (Mandurah/Pinjarra) were recruited way back in the 1970s from the country but both had played State Schoolboys or Teal Cup for WA and WAFL Colts certainly in Taylors case.
It is a completely different football world & landscape 45 years on with the demands now placed.

there were a few whose careers started there, but the Victorians did not play them in their league sides at sixteen

Thats true BH, you only have to look at Lewis Upton at Subi, he was an absolute gun up North, Touted as a great recruit but has managed just 1 league game in an injury ravaged Subi league team. Has had an injury and is currently a good ressies player. He needs a second full uninterupted Subi pre-season to match it with WAFL league players. he has the skills to be a regular league player once he builds his tank.

No I’m referring to the requirements to nominate for the 2020 AFL Draft - but it’s been the same since I was eligible to nominate in the mid-90s.

You’re correct though, some people on here have no idea!
