SS no one other than a handful of WP supporters & State Govt (WAFC) bureaucrats believe a WAFL GF should be played at the Joondalup Windmill.
What gets me is the WAFC never consult with those of us who are WAFL attendants each and every week rain, hail or shine where we believe the game should be held instead always have these inhouse WAFC groups (although never anyone from the SDFC I might add) who usually have a parochial hidden agenda, fark me we are the ones who keep this comp running and pay these clowns salaries in one way or another and yet we never ever even get consulted for our opinion or ideas!

I think its as obvious as the nose on everyones face that everyone agrees the GF should be at Optus but where too if not available. My entire argument is not necessarily in support of Joondalup having it, Im chiming in because most on hear are saying Joondalup is a shit ground, despite your hatred for WP or whatever your agenda is, it stands out in front of most grounds in the comp and for the record I think the best ground to have it is Freo Oval.

Beas, if they consulted us lot on where to play the GF they would get the tripe that has filled 8 pages on this particular thread. Further more you would vote Basso so on and so forth and its a merry go round.

Basso and EF seem a bit high, I was at the SD EP final a few yeas back when they had about 12k there and it was jammed.

For me certain venues eliminate themselves, Joondy - location, Basso - changeroom facilitiess, EF crap facilities, Rushton - location, lathlain & Cl - capcity which leaves Freo & Leederville as viable venues, both well located, both in entertainment precincts.

Yep, been looking at that website for a few years.

You are right, it tends to be quite a few years behind in ground changes.

For example Fremantle Oval has not been updated to factor in the Dockers abomination that removed the Doig and Hospital end hill, meaning capacity is now around 12K. Originally being 23,000 , the Parry St extension and then Shockers knocked it right back. To make it worse big portions of the terrace are suffering erosion and are fenced off, that will have to be sorted if we host the GF.

EF is way out, the place has been run right down, all the outter shelters have been removed around most of the ground, although the actual dimensions have not changed, it could still hold 15,000 plus but the problem is the facilities there are so bad now it could not cope, add to that no train and nightmare parking - forget it.

Lathlain and Claremont - just too small.

Basso dimensions are pretty much the same , but they seem to use the eastern end as a Carpark now, it could hold 20K with most standing on the banks in the 70s.

Leederville once held almost 25K until its changes.

Spot on SS well summed up but in any event the GF should be played at Optus. They don’t have a problem with opening the stadium to less than half capacity for AFL 2 or 3 times a week do they? We don’t hear of the stadium running at a loss or food and beverage outlets being closed do we?

Ive got no problem with that as long as Perth Footy Club agree to fund the shortfall.

At the moment the media quids pay for any shortfall to run the AFL games at Optus, but the clubs will still take a hit - thats not the case with the WAFL, theres no money media tree.

I think it costs 150K to rent the Stadium for the day to play the game, and both years they have made losses.

Leedy I have been on record many times here saying the WAFL GF should always be held at Perth Stadium as it at least gives our 135yo Premier State Sporting Competition the prestige it deserves. If it is held at a suburban ground it automatically loses that and I believe it devalues the product and the event and just becomes another amateur or sunday league GF.
My beef with Joondalup is why it was considered the first choice GF venue by the WAFC outside of PS being unavailable when Fremantle, Leederville & Bassendean have just as good if not better facilities in regards to- Grandstands-shelter from rain or sun, public transport-train stations within 300m walking distance from gate, bars, entertainment/meal/drink options within 300m outside the gate etc.
It is pretty obvious Joondalup is only being put up for political reasons.

Having said all that it is now becoming obvious the afl will be holding the finals in QLD so this bullshit about the Stadium being unavailable becomes a moot point as it wont be used at all after this next fortnight until the Big Bash Cricket starts at Christmas.

Now if the bureaucrats at the WAFC are doing the job they are substantially well paid for they will be organising a better deal for the use of PS for our Premier State Based sporting competition, remember this is not an event run for interstate or overseas bodies like the afl, nrl, ra, concerts etc!

BH isn’t it fkn amazing how the WAFC are prepared to wipe out nearly a million dollars in debt for one WAFL club yet aren’t prepared to possibly risk losing 100k by playing the WAFL GF at Optus which I doubt would happen as long as Subiaco don’t make another GF. The only reason attendances have dropped off in recent grand finals is due to Subiaco’s dominance and the Fremantle/Peel alliance. What was the attendance at the 2010 GF between Swans and Claremont? I’m guessing 25,000 plus.

DD...there was 25k at the Subi v WP GF in 2018. Admittedly there was a novelty factor involved being the first GF at Optus but if the WAFC actually pulled their fingers out and promoted the game I reckon you'd get a lot more and would go close to breaking even.

Agree BC they are full of shit. They’ll invent any excuse. They said games at Optus have $7 built into the price to cover free public transport. It’s not free then is it? And surely no matter where the GF is played the same applies regards using public transport if you are going to the GF and I guarantee the price of admission at Joondalup would still be $25 plus.

I think I had to pay $25 to watch a scratch match between Fremantle and Collingwood last year at Joondy yet if it’s a chicks game at Fremantle or Optus free entry or 10 bucks not a farrrking problem. Good to see equality is alive and well.

Well it is increasingly looking likely that all the AFL finals will be played in QLD, as wacko nut job bat shit crazy as that is ( not using OPTUS ) it actually presents for the WAFL to get a decent local crowd at the GF as it will be the ONLY Aussie Rules finals played here.

If that is the case and the stars align then maybe they can get 20K plus, and have it at Optus but we all know there will be little of no PR to get a crowd in.

The break even must be around the 28K mark.

If anyone is stupid enough to want their grand final then they can have it - and if anyone honestly believes the poisonous deliberately evasive bastards will stay in Victoria and watch it on telly then they are fools
There will be thousands of them scrambling north at any cost to get to their grand final
