What a fantastic game of footy the 78 Grand Final was.The Buzz almost pulled off the hattrick for the Demons.Barry Cables drop kick early in the match. Both Rob Wiley and Phil Kelly where taken off the ball a number of times. But both players went on to be fantastic on the day.

Can anyone tell me, do these games have to be watched live or will they stay on you tube afterwards?

Brilliant idea and thank you to WAFL Video Archive for playing these great old WAFL games online and to showcase how great our WAFL football was back then (as many of us who witnessed it first hand have banged on for years about) pre the WCE & Fremantle and their over the top media hype of today.

Players from both teams in that game (and all WAFL clubs from the era) of the calibre of Barry Cable, Phil Kelly, Ian Miller, Wayne Otway, John Hayes, Larry Kickett, Steve Curtis, George Michalczyk, Alex Hamilton, Kevin Bryant, John McGuire, Wayne Duke, Brad Smith, Paul Arnold etc from EP and then Robert Wiley, Peter Bosustow (incredible performance to kick 7 majors in that weather), Alan Johnson, Brian Cook, Gary Gibellini, Kevin Hill, Chris Mitsopoulos, Doug Farrant, Steve Hargrave, Wayne Currie, Ken Inman, Wim Rosbender etc from P should all be household names here in WA?

But unfortunately these great footballers have all been largely forgotten in this Victorian centric media driven footy history of today and sadly it is only really us WAFL diehards who still fondly remember their past deeds and achievements on the footy fields of battle sadly quite frankly.

Hopefully some of these great old videos can help restore some pride and relevance in our VERY OWN great WAFL history!

For fans of WAFL WA footy uploads on YouTube are highly recommended and includes may Grand Finals in their entirety.

The 1983 foundation day derby for me stands out - but has an unpleasant ending. The 1989 Foundation day derby was another classic with South stealing defeat from the jaws of victory this time though.

1988 Preliminary was heartbreaking but regardless is a thriller.

2010 GF is a another that deserves a mention.

Beasley Hutton wrote: Some of the classic WAFL H&A games of the past that have stuck in my memory that would be great to view again were-

SD vs SU at Bassendean Oval 1979 -Record score game
SD vs PH at Lathlain Park 1979 -Possibly the changing of the guard for both clubs
SD vs WP at Leederville Oval 1980 -Simon Beasley kicked the winning score very late
SD vs CL at Claremont Oval 1981 -Record crowd for Claremont Oval at the time
SD vs EP at Perth Oval 1981, 82 or 83 (Leon Baker turned the game on its head in last qtr)
SD vs SF at Bassendean Oval 1983 -The Stephen Michael Express Game
SD vs EF at Bassendean Oval 1984 -SDFC 50th Anniversary Game

Love the black and white view of things BH. Agree with your inclusion of the 1979 Round 3 game at Lathlain. In the context of the Easter split round it was just a close result - everyone was still talking about the 22,000 at EF and the home team's last quarter fight back on the Saturday - but in context of the next decade it was massive. I do not think it was on TV...gosh I wish it had and that it had been preserved.

Yes that is right Beas' - the archives are now entirely owned by either Eastern States / overseas business (ie: TV stations) which are pro-AFL heavily and will never be allowed to re-emerge and threaten dominance - which by the way would begin almost immediately given the growing unhappiness with Victorian incompetance and the ruination of a once bloody interesting sport
They've turned the game into something grotesque , something unpleasant and ugly , something that has no soul or character and removed spectacle
Quite simply it is just a job and a boring see it every day pile of garbage where everyclub just copies each other year after year after year after >>>> oh yeah year
Think I'm going to be spending the rest of my years in the manshed tinkering and remembering the good days and looking at the very few old newspaper clips I kept in the shoebox
Thank god I was at the 1979 derby at Fremantle Oval with the other 23398 people and saw my ground so totally full none of us ate anything coz we couldn't move at all!

In terms of games, the last match between EP and WP in 1980 was an interesting one, as the garlics had to win by nine goals to make the four. They managed to achieve the margin at one stage, but fell away to miss the finals.
