arrogance is when the leader of an opposition states to all and sundry that they will quit if they lose their seat - also clearly reveals weakness and lack of fight
pretty much sums up the Liberal Party in WA come to think of it mate
I'm not sure what he's supposed to do if he loses his seat....run errands for the Libs 3 remaining members?

impression could be made that the young bloke knows he will be removed after the election because the others don't want to be smashed in their backyards themselves by taking that job for the election
if Dawesville goes you'd think a lot of other supposedly safe seats could get real ugly

One would have to wonder why Kirkup nominated for Liberal leader prior to this current election.  It showed an appalling lack of political judgment and/or arrogance.  Given the size of the ALP's victory in 2017 it was always likely that Labor would be returned in 2021.  When you take into account the approval of the state government's handling of the COVID-19 pandemic  Labor winning was even more likely.  This was the situation at the time of the Liberal leadership spill in 2020.  Up pops Kirkup who is in the most marginal of marginal seats.  He decides to nominate for leader where there is virtually no chance of the LNP winning government and of necessity rather than campaign on a daily basis in Dawesville as Liberal leader he would need to spend more time outside of Dawesville than in it.  I would also point out that unlike say, Bob Hawke, Kirkup was a relative unknown to most West Australians.

Why wouldn't Kirkup have waited to after this election and assuming that he retained Dawesville nominate for the leader at that point in time?  The advantage would be that he would have a full 4 years to build up his experience and profile prior to the 2025 election.  If the LNP did not win in 2025 and provided the Liberals performed respectfully in the 2025 he would be in a position to win the 2029 election.

Kirkup certainly "believes in himself"
Anyone who manicures their facial hair that much spends a lot of time looking at themselves in the mirror and thinks they're pretty bloody special. The Liberal party were happy to make him the sacrificial goat in this election and reset after it.

All very good points 42. I was in Belfast a few years ago and spoke to a few locals in the pub one night about the Titanic. They reckon that at first it was a national shame the thing sank. Then after a few years they pointed the finger at the Scottish captain. These days they just say "stuff it....it was perfectly fine when it left here!!". Maybe Kirkup should have adopted the same attitude by sitting back ,watching the ship sink then take over after the election.

Dawesville is long gone and Im moving Kalgoorlie from a possible win for Labor to a Win.
Bazza which electorate do you think will be the high/low (depending on one's perspective) water mark of the Liberal seats?  Personally, I think it is Churchlands.

If anyone is interested the link below is for the WA seat pendulum:

Pendulum - Western Australia Election 2021 guide | WA Votes - ABC News (Australian Broadcasting Corporation) .

I'd say Nedlands ( Bateman a strong chance to go for mine) will be the wall cannot see much falling over 8 - but then again will swings of 10% plus are possible.

You know when you see a truck driving around Melville saying we will built Roe 8 and 9 they are super worried about Bateman and absolutley clutching at straws to stop it falling, nothing like re fights yesterdays lost battles.

Been very interested in the MUA's blanket anti McGowan campaign to stop the new Kwinana Container Port, lets hope Sneakers can stand up to the union bs and build us the new future port we need.

Cannot see your logic there mate? how on earth does he remain as leader without a seat?

It's actually a pretty standard line.

What on earth is arrogant about nominating?

Its a nomination, he still needs to win the vote to be leader, it was others that selected him over other nominations. He had a go and won the vote. Pretty obvious he was just a patsie they picked to run and lose.

Absolutely nothing stopping him from running for pre-selection next time if he wants to get back in. Young enough to have a few cracks.

he would be handed another seat by winning candidate given his age & ambition (whoever that may be) - but as we've become aware of he is simply a means to an end
the end being a concede to defeat by the looks of it mate

As other blokes here have typed , this Labor Government have done a very good job by large in unprecedented times when you compare the horrendous fark ups in Victoria & NSW and the filthy corruption that is obvious in those two states

WA has been protected big time when it could have been very ugly and I deeply respect his stance particularly against that rotten thing in power in NSW
