I do agree mr afl talls take time the problem with perth is they have 20 guys that we can say need time to develop and have had injury problems and so on we carry to many of these type players so rather than having guys develop in the resies and earn there league spot through hard work and good consistent form they get given league games becos we have to many injuries and guys under performing HARD decisions need to be made based purely on a players willings to work hard get better and perform year in and year out the club cant have players there becos there favourites or have potential year in year out i think as a club we need to get results on field sooner rather than later and the young guys need good experienced players around them to learn off to develop

Mr AFL wrote: Will be interesting to see which players leave the club in the off season. Anyone over 2 points needs to be assessed and looked at and asked if they are going to be there over the next 2-3 years. Obviously a player like Paul Bevan who is valued at 12-points carries a bit extra as he offers more to the team other than his out put on the field.

We know that Jared Risol and Nick Kane will not be going around in 2015 so that frees up 15-points in the cap. By my rough calculations we have a squad size of 50 players at 98-points in value. I have included Paul Bevan in this squad who's points will get halved next season from 12 to 6.

That leaves 22-points available to spend on recruits. That's enough to go and get two, possibly three players to address the needs of the team.

To make more space available I would be having a look at whether or not the following players are going to be a part of the next 2-3 years under the new coach.

  • Mark Deaves is a good reserves player but don't think he is capable of playing regularly at league and hitting the scoreboard often enough. He is only 2-points but it's still points that could be spent elsewhere.
  • Matthew Moody has been a very good servant of the club playing 95 games for the club since coming over after his stint in the AFL with Brisbane ended. Whilst he is capable of going on at 29 years of age and valued at 5-points the question as to be asked.
  • Cale Morton has no problem finding the football but he just looks to me a player that could deliver a lot more but just doesn't. At 11-points he is an expensive player and only played nine games.
  • Mitch Morton hasn't had a good year. Does not look fit and while he showed glimpses of his best and just didn't seem to me like he got going. Again like his brother Cale is 11-points and he only lined up 12 times this year for the Demons.

  • That's possibly another 29-points that possibly could be freed up if these players decide that they don't want to continue at Perth next year or the club or new coach decides to move them on.

From memory Mitch Morton signed a fairly long contract for a WAFL player/club so i can't see the club sending him packing as he wouldn't have come cheap.

Wasn't it a year with the option for a second?

The thing about it is, that if Curley was one of six, he should have been appointed then and there by the club. The only justification with going through the 'process' would have been if the other candidates were similar in standing to Curley. Yet, we find that the other candidates were dis-regarded by the club once Curley chose South; it was bloody stupid. They should ask John Dimmer to do it for year until they find the experienced coach they need on a long-term basis. But that would really stuff up their 'process' because Dimmer is on the selection committee, would it?

Mr AFL wrote: I was hoping that it would be Todd Curley but he took the South Fremantle Job. I know the club had a group of six candidates which included Curley. This was said a couple of weeks ago by Marty Atkins on the radio. I understand why they have re-opened the application process with state league clubs and AFL teams seasons coming to an end over the last week.

By doing this they must be aware of some candidates that have finished over the last week or two that you would think would be better than some people in that original group of 6.

Here's hoping that we can have a coach in place before the WAFL GF. That's 19 days away.

At the moment I am of the opinion that we need someone that will challenge the players. For too long now players have been able to get away with not reaching the required standards to play WAFL. This is just my opinion btw. I think someone like a Peter German or even a Simon McPhee would be good but are they available.

Mr AFL wrote: If we are to look at a squad mainly made up of players that are 1-point in value with the exception of Paul Bevan, Aiden Tropiano, Rowan Brookes and Leyendekkers then here is roughly how the squad would look.

Back: Holland, Jones, Hunt
Half Back: Sinclair, Billings, Irons
Centre: Florio, Tropiano, Manuel
Half Forward: Bateman, Bevan, Collard
Forward: Stack, Busher, Eyres

Ruck: Leyendekkers, White, Ugle

Interchange: O'Sulliavan, Houghton, Hug, Power, Kalajzic, Browne, Leggett, Arangio, Leeson, Boyle, Edmonds, Brookes.

Looking at that squad we definitely need a key forward, key back and at least two key midfielders.

We have to be honest here, that spine would struggle to dominate against the top ressies team!!
Honestly we have to get it right and that team line-up re-inforces in my mind just how weak our squad is.

Looking at that lineup we need 2 tall kpp's forward,2 Kpp's in the backline and about 3 quality mids.
Hodge is 1 point also other than the Mortons, who else is there of note?
Then theres the "no depth" factor.
Im sorry to paint a real grim outlook but gee we are in a spot of bother no matter who coaches us.

I have a feeling we are all going to hear the "rebuild" word again for the umpteenth time in the past 3 decades.

Are you targeting anyone from EP to fill these roles. Perhaps Chatley, Jones, Wilson or Wityk. I think these guys are developing very nicely and could help you.

Can't believe I missed out Hodgey. That there is at least one positive in 2015, the fact that he will be back on deck and hopefully playing good consistent football like he did in 2013.

Could he be our next captain? We do need one of them in 2015?

I don't think Shane Woewodin will be coming to Lathlain. Under a coaching re-structure Shane will be the new coach of Brisbane's NEAFL side.

It was reported on 6pr's rumour file that the coaching saga is that dire that Marty Atkins went to the board and said he would relinquish his role as CEO and take on the coaching job.

Very interesting, Marty used to coach Wembley in the ammos and I was told by a former Perth colts player who played under him a few years ago "he's a very good coach". Thats commitment, Marty wants to see Perth succeed on the field. We will watch this space.
