King, I have said it before that there must be a change right through every level of the club.
The Board must stay at arm's length from football operations and give the CEO, Football Manager, Senior Coach and support staff free reign to get their jobs done. Each must have a clear brief as to their responsibilities and be given the resources to carry them out.
There should be clear reporting lines all the way back to the Board and at each level the personnel will be judged on performance.

Smokester, this is where the difficulty lies.
The football department has to produce a budget for the annual business plan just like all the other departments of the Club.
So it is not always possible to "plan" things such as recruiting coups.
The business plan is put together in October each year (I think from memory).

Rightly or wrongly the budget does have it's say.
So does the Board.

This is where the CEO must play an important role in changing the business plan by finding funds.

Agree DF but that should not prevent the Board remaining at arms length.
As you say, the CEO must find the funds for, say, a coaching appointment or any other circumstance beyond the limits of the business plan.
In a situation as we currently have we may well have to go outside the budget to get the right man for the coaching position and as you and I know the CEO has options to pursue in that regard.
In fact he may not be the pursuer but rather may be the pursuee.

In any event, we are possibly talking about next year's budget and any recruiting will be provisioned in that budget. Let's call it "forward estimates"

Yes Smokester, you are correct with the CEO.
If planning is already underway for 2015, as is the case (looking for Coach etc).
The CEO needs every bit of input and so that the budget is structured accordingly.
Not just last year's budget plus 5% CPI.
But it still needs the Board to vote for it.
I hope we have the right Board.
It worries me that there are not too many (none) football people on it.

Df i think u got off the point abit there i dont think the budget or funds are a problem perth has proved it has the resources and funds to recruit ie davis bevan bateman ugle 3 x mortons and others its about the right coach who can do things his way if kays as footy manager has been in charge of tecruiting then he should be sacked and need a better person to recruit smarter for positional needs and longevity not just recruiting the best names who are probably past there best or are injury prone

Not really off subject.
I am quite aware of our position in the football community in terms of financial position.

.

Gary Ayres is a friend of Ex colts coach Dave Johnson I am told. Dave was shafted in the early days of Mc Mahon's rise up the coaching ladder at Perth along with a few other coaches there. Maybe this influenced his decision to apply at South?

Mark Readings just said this morning on 6PR that Mark Harvey has ruled himself out of coaching in the WAFL next year. The list is getting thinner.
