Blackwell was also a very good footballer and Doc Aitken could play.
no lack of talent in that team.

Phil wouldn't have got a kick in the fwd line on Zanotti nor on D.Lamb when on the ball, same applies to Ralph on Crutchfield or Wilkinson. I'll give you Jimmy although the talent of B.Taylor and O'Loughlin can not be underestimated. Even then jimmy would have be starved of the ball due to the dominance of ruckmen Keene and Scott. Aitkin would be no match for the pace, strong hands and lonnng kicking of Dean and blackwell vs Feathers would be pretty even with Feathers just edging him out imo...

Very funny DG...ol Wazza Ralph must have just got lucky this day back in 83 on Crutchfield! ;)

Yep , a massive inaccuracies count cost us back to back flags in what should of been a period of dominance, it would herald a slow but steady decline for us that also coincided with the end of Wafls glory days. 3 grand fianls appearance in a star studded team for one flag will always be short change.

The WAFL had lost at least 30 superstar players to the VFL from that period of 80-82 by the time of 86 and was a lot lesser standard and even lesser again in 87!

Oh yeah Beas you mean with players like Waterman, McIntosh, Mckenna, Lamb, Jackovich, Worsfold, Matera, Turley, Mainwaring, Langdon, Brennan, Wilson, Evans, Sumich, Heady, Harding, Kemp, Pyke, Lewis, White to name a few running around? Come to think of it that looks like the side that knocked off the mighty cats in 92...

See mate this where I can't compare - most of the guys you list here were educated or influenced by the 80-83 champions , it sort of disrespects either group
I'd definitely bank on the early 80's teams to beat the Viccos - 30 years after 1977 Don Scott & Lou Richards were still talking about number 30 for WA

More generally on Claremont in 1981, I stress again, it is fact that the club had the best record in the WAFL since 1946. They also had to put up with SF going the fist and still won. All facts, not subjective stuff. Why do you think Brownie go them to go the fist?

Brownies tactic should of came off, they went hard at the man, and Claremont were defiantly rattled ,we had the most scoring opportunities lead at the two last changes , the second 1/4 we should of put the game beyond doubt, but it wasn't to be.

Remarkably successful transition from basically a centreman/ruck-rover to a prolific centre-half-forward and full-forward , bagged 82 goals
Extremely strong overhead for his size

Still to this day he is the last Richmond Premiership Captain Southy.
Was a superstar who kicked a big bag in the 1st Semi that year, but surprisingly ended up at Claremont a couple of years later?!

Even though the SF,SD,Cl,EF era of the early 80's was only a few years before the CL, SU era of the mid 80's the style of footy that Bunton brought to Su and similarly Neesham brought to CL was vastly different to the early 80's stuff. It was all around chip and run footy relying on high level foot skills, kicking sideways and backwards, hard gut running and super fast ball movement. The start of the era with smaller faster players with big tanks, so a bit pointless comparing teams from different eras, but great to reminisce about past glory's.

From a Swans point of view, I thought we were in with a real show when we slugged it out with Claremont in the last qualifying game at Claremont Oval. It was a fantastic game which we lost but both teams kicked over 20 goals. Roll on the grand final I thought, but a combination of injuries to key players and loss of form at the wrong time meant that Swans didn't even make the big dance. I don't think I have ever been so gutted after a Swans game than I was after the preliminary final thrashing by South Fremantle, but in retrospect I have to admit that the best two teams in the WAFL that year played off in the GF. And what a game it was.
For Swans it was a case of the darkest time before the dawn and we returned the compliment to the Doggies in the 1983 preliminary final on our way to the flag.
