gtr: good footballer, best long kick I have ever seen. I think he got bashed about playing for Melbourne and sustainned leg injuries. He played on a wing for the red and blues from memory. He returnned to Subi, but managged only one or two games for us -- a real pity for him.

81 was the year Bruce Monteath returned to his club of origin from a stint in the VFL where he was at one stage Captain of Richmond.
Remarkably successful transition from basically a centreman/ruck-rover to a prolific centre-half-forward and full-forward , bagged 82 goals
Extremely strong overhead for his size

And 1981 would be the year Maurice Rioli signed the old VFL "form 4" to transfer to Richmond - the Grand Final loss to Claremont sealed it

Ultimately in a vain bid to somehow perform a miracle and replace him , Malcolm Brown would try several recruitings in the coming 3 seasons in different strategies - players like Geoff Gillies , Brian Close , Chris Stasinowsky , Willie Roe , Paul Arnold , John Hayes , Dave Rawlinson , Barrie Quick , David Hart would wear red and white

I vividly remember wandering under the members bit after 9pm after that 81 Grannie loss - the cartons of beer probably 10 deep on the rub table - Mal Brown saddest disappointed look on his face , they were all pretty shattered but Basil had a smile on his face , saw TI later in deep convo with Mal real serious chat , Paul Mountain looked rooted , Cicco was talking to either "Super" (Monteath) or Paul Vasoli
Bad night down at the boneyard that one

The WAFL had lost at least 30 superstar players to the VFL from that period of 80-82 by the time of 86 and was a lot lesser standard and even lesser again in 87!

I will assume you think the Old Easts side of 1982 was better than the Old East's side of seasons 1985-86 considering it not only got within 10 goals of both Swan Districts and Souths but beat both teams away during that season.

And we beat both EF and Subi away in 85 and our side that year were not a patch on the earlier 80s teams...your point?

If the 1982 side could get within 10 goals I think the 1985-6 could too, that is the point - I would of thought it was pretty obvious no?

Oh yeah Beas you mean with players like Waterman, McIntosh, Mckenna, Lamb, Jackovich, Worsfold, Matera, Turley, Mainwaring, Langdon, Brennan, Wilson, Evans, Sumich, Heady, Harding, Kemp, Pyke, Lewis, White to name a few running around? Come to think of it that looks like the side that knocked off the mighty cats in 92...

More generally on Claremont in 1981, I stress again, it is fact that the club had the best record in the WAFL since 1946. They also had to put up with SF going the fist and still won. All facts, not subjective stuff. Why do you think Brownie go them to go the fist?

Yes Ark by less than a kick
