The BIG V loVE THE BIG V

Three cheers to victorian football.

All those who use to support a WAFL club first and a VFL club with interest, who now only support a Victorian club SHAME SHAME SHAME.

I could never understand how a WAFL supporter who had supported their club for many years, and in some cases decades, could suddenly decide that they would stop doing that when the Eagles came in.

It is imperative that all those who support the legitimate seven clubs continue their support and if possible get others to come to the games and increase that support.

Hopefully, the game against the club formerly known as East Perthw will see a big crowd this Saturday at Basso.

Swan42, I agree, what I found that many people from 1987 - till about the time the Eagles won their first GF still attended WAFL matches , although they dropped off in numbers the attendances were not to bad, in 1989 there was a good pick up in attendaces nearly 40,000 attended the WAFL GF.

From 1992 onwards was when the numbers really fell away and of course the entry o the dockers was a real deal knell,,

We now have a generational structural decline problem it is now over 20 years since WAFL was a big comp in WA, which means younger to middle aged fans have no connection to WAFL, this is at the heart of the comps decline as a public event.

2007 (Week 1 to Week 6) Total attendance for all games = 46,723 people. No split rounds.

2008 (Week 1 to Week 6) Total attendance = 47,565 people. No split rounds involved.

2009 (Week 1 to Week 6) Total attendance = 61,352 people. No split rounds were played.

2010 (Week 1 to Week 6) Total attendance = 54,972 people. No split rounds for the first 6 weeks.

2011 (Week 1 to Week 6) Total attendance = 50,190 people. One split round.

2012 tooka bit of a dive. (Week 1 to Week 6) Total attendances = 27,938. One split round.

2013 (Week 1 to Week 6) Total attendance is 42,664 but I think the 2013 attendance figures (so far) are questionable?

I'm unsure where you got your attendance figures from but I'm assuming that you checked the official attendance figures from WAFLOnline. I'm also assuming that your total attendance for 2007 to 2011 are correct. However the 2012 total also didn't seem right. If you check the 2012 figures for rounds 1 to 6 was actually 45,628. Also the totals for 2013 as published add up to 38,462. This 2013 figure does not include three games from Round six that are yet to be published.

Another variable is the number of games played in the first 6 rounds each season.
During 2007 - 2012 there were 24 games in the first six rounds. In 2011 & 2012 there were 22 games in the first 6 rounds. In 2013 there are attendance figures for 19 games published for the first 6 rounds so far.

There have been questions for many years about the official attendance figures submitted by clubs. Are the rumours true? Who really knows?!

So based on the above the average attendance per game for the period 2007 - 2013 (Rounds 1 - 6) are:
2007 @ 1946 per game
2008 @ 1982
2009 @ 2556
2010 @ 2290
2011 @ 2281
2012 @ 2074
2013 @ 2024

You can read what you want into these figures but I suspect that when we include the attendance figures from the Anzac round and do a similar analysis for rounds 1 to 7 that the 2013 figure will stack up favourably with previous years with the exception of 2009. QED.

Overall attendance after 7 rounds (YTD):
2007 (28 games) 52,785 @ average of 1885 per game;
2008 (28 games) 57,765 @ average of 2063 per game;
2009 (28 games) 69,765 @ average of 2491 per game;
2010 (28 games) 63,432 @ average of 2265 per game;
2011 (26 games) 57,827 @ average of 2224 per game;
2012 (26 games) 54,306 @ average of 2088 per game; and
2013 (26 games) 53,828 @ average of 2070 per game;

It would seem that from 2009 (with the halcyon days of The Wiz and Peter Bell helping to attract larger crowds) that we do have a downward trend emerging.

The question is what more can the clubs do to promote their games. It would appear pointless to wait for the WAFC to help promote WAFL games as their focus appears to be elsewhere!

Yep 2009 was a great year, as you say SF did the comp a wealth of good with some big name players, crowds were up and about and over 11,000 attended foundation day ( sadly the last hurrah ).

since that peak its been pretty obvious decline and that was without the alignment impacts.

By my calculation, the average attendance for 2013 is now at about 2037 per game. That seems fairly steady on last year. After all, you can lose an average of 50 people per game by just having one weekend of really bad weather... or a clash with a West Coast/Fremantle televised game etc etc. Interesting to see the crowd average per club. As I have it (and I'm very happy for someone to check my maths), it's as follows for 2013:

East Fremantle: 2300
East Perth: 2292
West Perth: 2206
Swan Districts: 2177
Perth: 2053
South Fremantle: 2004
Subiaco: 1972
Claremont: 1818
Peel: 1535

I thought the Sharks' attendance might be a bit down given where they sit, but glad to see their supporters are sticking by them.

Barney it is interesting to note that Swan's attendances are down 1.28% and our home attendances are down 16.61%. This would suggest to me that the opposing club's supporters are not attending the games at Basso.

A variety of reasons behind Swans home decrease. Playing on Easter Saturday this year compared to Easter Monday last year. Was 1500 less this year and that made about a 5% difference over the yearly figures.

Also last week was not a good week to have a home game, lowest weekly average crowd with four metro games in a long time.

Last years game in Manjimup has also given Swans a solid % increase in total crowds this year (country games are registered as away games for both teams). Without that game Swans total crowds would be an extra 3-4% down this year.

Also I made a mistake transfering South Fremantles home figures, it should be a negative change and not a positive change. The two Fremantle teams alternate positive and negative home averages year on year depending on who hosts the Foundation Day Derby.

West Perths home crowd decrease % has been affected by the English game last year.

Barney, yep Souths figures have been a shocker this year, not just the foundation day event either, across the board attendances have been well down.

I'm interested in an update on official crowd figures if anyone can help? Especially in the wake of the 6100+ crowd at Joondalup on Sunday...

Whatever you have time to provide, Barney. I love to be able to look at all the stats and see if there are obvious reasons for falls/increases. For instance, some of my East Perth mates were suggesting that West Perth had damaged its own brand by Raponi constantly talking about a compromised competition because of the alignment. In fact, they believed WP's attendances were down, as a result. Last year's average was skewed by the international game, so now that this year's international game has been played, the WP game average would be one area of interest...
Thanks very much for the offer, btw!
