Brilliant post LH :)

Backs up what I pointed out to that fremantle sycophant anchorman long ago that the last time this ludicrous host club crap was in existence WAFL crowds went backwards & have been on the upward curve since it was abandoned!

Yeah, the WAFL slowly but surely got back on it's feet. The late 90's and early 2000's were tough years.

It seems unfair, that after what you would call a "fine come back" by the comp - firstly after the entry of Peel which set things back, and then the host club situation of the early 2000's, we have to again find a way to fight back and do it all over again.

I feel that Peel will probably get bigger crowds. They couldn't get any worse put it that way. They've been a burden on the comp from day 1, bringing down overall attendance numbers and losing most matches. At least that will change.

But East Perth are going to be a problem for the comp from here on. It's hard to get my head around how we can compete with them from 2014. We probably can't!

Still, I'm not giving up. I know the high quality of players that are coming through at Subi in 15's, 16's, 17's and colts and I'm confident we'll at least give the East Perth Eagles something to think about in the next 5 years. Will be tough though of course - but we've all got to find a way to lift our standards and compete with them. We've got no alternative but to try.

will be interesting to see the attendances for ef when & if the redevolpment will happen in a couple of years time and also with the dockers moving to cockburn will no doubt effect sf attendances....and i've said all along sf biggest impact will be their sponsorship dollars with the dockers moving

It's interesting. We keep getting told by some sections of the media that the WAFL hasn't been traveling that well. Yet, all clubs have shown a big increase in attendance numbers since the gloomy days of 2002-2004.

To be fair, I averaged out the clubs numbers from 2002-2006 and then did the same for years 2007-2012.

South Fremantle up 26%
East Fremantle up 25.6%
Perth up 25.4%
Subiaco up 22.4%
Swan Districts up 18%
West Perth up 15.8%
Claremont up 11.9%
East Perth up 9.1%
Peel up 8.1%

The media could have highlighted this and put the WAFL in a positive light but chose not to.

You'd be hard pressed to find other competitions/sports in Australia where attendance numbers are going up like this.

The attendance figures for 1985 and before then are very impressive.
1985- 634,791 people watched the 21 qualifying matches.
But after that season the attendance figures started to decline at an alarming rate. :(
1990- 287,329 is the total attendance for the qualifying rounds of 21 matches.
1995- 154,467 being the total figure of attendees for the 21 qualifying games.
2000- 147,806 people watched the 21 qualifying matches.
Atendance figures shown are for qualifying rounds only and do not include the Finals series.
But after about 2005, the total attendance figures started rising at a good steady rate.

ok, that means 187,000 watched the qualifying rounds in 2012 as compared to 147,806 in 2000 and 150,000 in 2003. That's a fair rise.

We just need to aim for 200,000 this year. That should be the target.

I know for a fact that last year's home attendances for Perth were the lowest they had since 2004.

To be fair to Perth, it was the lowest since 2007 which was 1,668 as compared to 2012 which was 1,894

Perth's best attendances in that period were when Liz Bradley was at Perth and the one year after.

She did a power of work for that footy club off-field and made a big difference.

Having said that, it's not easy getting people along to the footy if your side is losing year after year - taking that into account 1,894 is a lot better than 1,580 (2005) and 1,577 (2006).

But yeah, Liz Bradley in 2008 and 2009 showed what can be done even if a side isn't winning.
