Prescott summed it up perfectly in the press when he said skill errors cost Claremont the flag. They had more possessions, inside 50s and time in forward half but were wasteful when they had it. That was partly due to Joondy's tackling pressure which they won 92 to 58.

Also a dream run from the maggots with 17 free kicks to 8 also helped Joondy which isn't unexpected as it's pretty much a weekly occurrence.

Inaccuracy in the first half was very costly for Claremont but winners are grinners and if you don't nail it on the big stage then you've only got yourself to blame.
should have a royal commission into it.It is not just this year it seems the last severall they have been on the positive side whereas i would think east perth, subi and the afl reserves sides  would be in the negative for free kicks.
Yes.  You are correct Chaddy.  Around 5 or 6 years ago I thought Subi were getting the rough end of the stick during a sustained period of on-field success and so I went through the exercise of comparing free kicks for to free kicks against for each team over the season.  Subi, EP and Peel were on the wrong side of the ledger whilst Joondy benefitted the most from a very lopsided free kick differential.

I didn't keep the numbers but the majority of teams were relatively equal except for Joondy in positive territory and EP, Peel and Subi in the negative.

gtr: Did Murray and Brown coach in those games?

The AFL has completely changed Aussie Rules in the last forty years through two things
coaches
umpires

They gave forty free kicks to each side when there were less umpires on the field; no one believes Claremont was worth just seven free kicks.

Ark I think Mal Brown caption coach EP in 1972.
1966-71 I think Jack Sheedy coached EP.
EP would get revenge in 1978 and 2002 on thoes clubs.

Watched the replay . How good was no score review, no protected areas and no deliberate out of bounds!!!

Gee, it felt like the 80s. Great to be in a big crowd at a suburban ground. The crowd makes the footy look better, and the game more significant. Really strong psychological effect.  Social referencing, I think they call it.

The sun was very hot, as BH points out. But people sit in the sun at Optus too. Though mostly out of choice.

This is a good time for the wafl gf. August-  early September is too early.
Apologies for smug attachment.

Yes JL. I'm not sure what spectator comfort was like in terms of viewing, access to dunnies, food and drink outlets and so on, but in terms of optics on TV it was a vast improvement on 2020 where Freo Oval looked like the exercise yard at Alcatraz. It appeared the atmosphere was pretty good and the playing surface stood up to it.

3 quality games of footy but next year has to be at Optus....no excuses from the WAFC.

gtrxuone, Kevin Murray was EP's captain-coach in 1966, Derek Chadwick in 1967-68, Jack Sheedy in 1969 and Mal Brown in 1971.
EP also lost the 1960 and 1961 GFs under Sheedy, making in 7 GF losses in the space of 12 years.
We (being the "Royals we") were long overdue to win a GF in 1972, with Big Mal as captain-coach.

Thanks for the correction Archie.I remember Kevin Murray on the channel 7 World Of Football. He was a business associate of my late father, who thought the world of Kevin.
Wow Derek Chadwick had a great sporting career.Originally from the south west.5000 Sheffield Shield Runs with 9 centurys.Almost averaged 40 runs per innings.Good effort in an era of really good fast bowlers.
Simpson Medal in a state game.EP fairest and best 1963+64.And a captain coach in a Grand Final.Played in all thoes Grand Finals.

I've never had the pleasure of meeting Kevin Murray or Derek Chadwick, gtrxuone, but they'd have to be two of the unluckiest footballers in terms of team success (i.e., premierships).
I looked up his VFL stats and Kev played in 42 successive losses with Fitzroy either side of his 1965-66 stint with East Perth.
His father Dan played in Fitzroy's most recent grand final (1944).
Chaddy played in six losing GFs, missing 1968 due to injury.
There have been far less accomplished Test openers than Chaddy who've worn the Baggy Green.
NSW's Bruce Francis and Alan Turner spring to mind ... but they do say that wearing the Baggy Blue cap is a passport to wearing the Baggy Green.

Well the 40K repairs worked and the weather did its part for the turf to turn out well.

Have to say it looked great on TV, they managed to get over 16,000 and there still seemed to be room on the hill.

Last Qrt had everything and would of been great atmosphere, to see the crowd running on the ground after the siren was great.

A lot better than Optus atmosphere wise, the consensus on the the social media was the experience was a lot better.

With a bit more work you could get 20,000 in there easy.
