Senior Seagull wrote: So do we assume that the AFL leftovers will be distributed amongst the 9 WAFL teams via a draft as it was previously, bottom team from this season gets first pick?, if so some questions need to be considered.

1. Given the current recruiting restrictions on Subi, will they be included in the draft?
2. How much influence will there be by the 2 AFL teams on the WAFL clubs that host their
players regarding where they play, how they play and how long they play, this previously
caused some angst and tended to unbalance teams, especially when they demanded a player
would only play restricted times.
3. Will the WAFL clubs salary caps be reduced according to how many AFL players play each
week, eg if 5 AFL players play the club only pays 17 players so their allowable cap is
reduced accordingly?

The WAFL clubs need to get some clear answers on these questions, and there will be many more.

Surely the WA boys will go back to their WAFL clubs of origin SS, that should be a no brainer and give the WAFL club that has developed & nurtured these boys since the age of 13 in most cases some reward for their work especially considering the WAFC took the draft monies off the clubs!?
As for those from Interstate then they should do the old reverse draft with the bottom team 9th getting first pick, 8th second pick, 7th third pick etc.

Well your obviously not abreast of why it was bubbled which was because a senior player was held out of the league side to make way for a mediocre AFL listed player who has since been de-listed like the other 80% we had on the list, and once we lost Wulffy,Johnson,Swan and other senior players we struggled to play finals despite having 14 AFL listed players on a weekly basis

Lets hope the AFL teams just keep their players separate. Please don't allow them into the WAFL where they show a total lack of commitment or care to the game at hand. Remember Ash Smith playing for Perth. Made me sick watching him. Do not allow this again
Victorians still laugh at West Aussies because of the way we bailed out the vfl and then allowed it to be called it the AFL!

So can people list which home grown players they will get back, and who is likely to actually play WAFL? No point saying that Nic Nat or Fyfe are returning players, for example. For Perth, our only player is Conca and we are unlikely to see much of him.

The reverse draft for interstate players involves a mixture of good luck and judgement. You want someone who will be a good WAFL player, but no so dominant that they get picked to play AFL. Subi got very lucky with Heatley years ago. You do run a risk of getting stuck with players who just aren't up to it, like Perth had with Juniper. Or you get one of these experimental basketballers. That said, reduced AFL lists may deter clubs from going for those types in future.

yes i was just referring to the non locals for the draft, would be travesty if players did not automatically go back to their original WAFL clubs. Subi wont get any games out of Sheed or Ryan and i dont think we have any players at Freo.

Heatley was not an AFL player he was recruited out of one of the Vicco leagues, he left Subi when recruited by St Kilda. We got lucky in the early naughties when we picked up Mundy & Crowley in the afl/WAFL draft as 18 year olds, both played in the 2004 premiership team, Mundy played CHB. 16 years later he's still a quality player at 35.

The best two players I can think of that Swans and SF benefited from over a long period of time were Ashley Hansen and Ryan Murphy. Both dominant goal kickers at WAFL level and often proved the difference when playing for the WAFL club they were allotted to.

I think Murphy is still running around kicking goals in the ammos. Just couldn’t establish himself at AFL level whereas Hansen while not a permanent fixture in the Eagles side could hold his own at AFL level and played in their 2006 premiership team if I’m not mistaken. Dodgy hammies didn’t help.

Massive generalisation. I've seen plenty of non Claremont players put in quality effort at Claremont. Suban, Silvagni,Schammer, Waters off the top of my head.
And SS Heatley was an Eagle, i didn't think Subi recruited him?

I'm pretty sure Subiaco recruited Heatley from the VFL then was drafted by WC same as Callum Sinclair. Perth recruited Justin Perkins out of the VFL then after one outstanding season was picked up by North Melbourne.

Correct DD. He was knocked back by Fitzroy so came across to Subi from North Heidelberg in 1993. He was picked up in the draft by WCE at the end of 1993 and delisted in 1996. He was redrafted by StK where he went on to play 60 odd games. He kicked 111 for Subi in 1993, 81 in '94, 123 in '95 and 55 in '96.
A terrific full forward and probably would have got a better run at WCE if Sumich wasn't around.

Lucky with Heatley? He and his mate Kane O’Brien came to Subi directly mate, from Heidelberg I think
