Overseas born Aussies highest in over a century

The proportion of Australians who were born overseas has hit its highest point in over 120 years, with 28 per cent of Australia's population born overseas, according to figures released today by the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS).

"Australia has traditionally had a high proportion of migrants, but we've now hit a peak not seen since the late 1800s," said Beidar Cho from the ABS.

The percentage of Australian residents born overseas has increased every year for the last 15 years.

"The number of Australian residents born in India has almost tripled over the last 10 years and residents born in China have more than doubled in this time."

The change in our migrant mix can best be observed in the differences in median age of certain groups.

"Migrants born in Italy, for example, had a median age of 64.7 years in 2005. This increased to 69.3 years in 2015 - indicating a drop in recent migration and the aging of existing migrants," said Ms Cho.

"On the other hand, migrants from our Asian neighbours, such as India, have seen a reduction in median age from 37 years in 2005 to 33.4 years in 2015."

ON what basis does anything of the above prove and I quote that "Asians are overruning Australia"?

Brendon Grylls and the Nationals have a wild card factor in this election.Noticed the big miners have started there AD Campaign on TV.Opposed to Brendons mining tax, remember Kevin Rudd.
Some points on all this. The GsT allocation to WA is an apsolute disgrace This Government and MR Abbots government treated us no better than Julia did.Does this National polocy stop the Hanson momentum around Australia .Is it what we now call Trumpism thinking outside the traditional box.

How much more obvious need to be stated...

Going by the figures Hanson has been proven entirely correct, in fact far more correct than even expected, since her first stint in Parliament as the Asian intake hasnt just grown its exploded.

And thats before you factor in the purchase of assets , property and the fact that a former Chinese agent publicly stated the number of active Chinese spies in Australia has duobled in the last 10 years...

Please explain why in 2000 we had about 80k intake a year and now we have 180K plus and have had for over a decade, mainly from China and India now and mainly being packed into Sydney resulting in the ludicrous jump in property prices and why this has been happening when we have growing un employment a health care system under huge pressure and a welfare bill that is exploding..its also worth noting that the Chinese intake of "parent" reunions runs at over 4000 per year , the next closest being the UK at about 700!...

Not to mention out in addition refugee intake is going from 12K to 19K ..lets hope its more reasoned than the disastrous intake if Lebanese and Sudanese..crime gangs, but somehow I don't think it will be.

Asian takeover of Australia is well ahead of schedule.

gtr: The Nationals have mucked it up, as other posters have pointted out with aplomb. Their voters believe in low taxation, which means those ads are going to be very successful. It is one thing to ask, for a better share of royalties monies, as their leader has done in the past, quite another to demand that taxes should be raised: I am bloody certain most farmers will see the difference, even if their leader fails to do so.

these are startling figures indeed Bazza....much worse than anyone predicted... I'd also like to see the relevant birth rates for each ethnic group mentioned which I'd suggest would reveal numbers far in advance of home grown second and third generation Aussies.

Both him and Barnaby Joyce must have been born in Hicksville.

Sure are BC, but its only the tip of the iceberg, other hidden figures are "students" on permanent visas etc, not to mention the massive disparity in parent reunions ..China being hugely out of proportion with other nationality, have a look at residential property purchases in Sydney , it paints a picture of where and who is buying up the City and forcing prices up and local buyers out.

The impact is mainly in Sydney and Melbourne to a lesser extent here..so a lot of this is going under the radar in WA, but speak to NSW people and they will tell you how the place has changed virtually "over night" in a decade or so.

Hansons observations 20 years ago have proven to been remarkably accurate and far more honest than many ever thought.
