Will this have an overall
adverse effect on players
dropping out of football
altogether?
The aim of the reformed talent pathway is to provide a clearly defined
and well-resourced under-age pathway that offers talented players the
best possible environment to succeed. The connection to community
youth football and to the senior pathway within WAFL clubs and senior
community football will still be strong, allowing opportunities for players
to transition once they move out of the 18’s competition. Through the
talent pathway, those who ‘fall out’ will be supported and engaged to
keep playing football.

so the job of supporting and engaging the kids who dont get drafted will be left to those at the WAFL clubs who have not been allowed to be involved in their development ?

sounds like a really good process..

Just for Bazza and Tugger....
SFFC were looking at the best person for the job in talent identification....The WAFC also were involved in the decision making which led to his appointment and have done so with most of the coaching positions at Colts level for a number of years.....

Yeah thats fine Dwert I read it long ago, I was wrong by comparison the SF colts coach is a fine candidate.
Lets make him a full time paid coach to focus on his coaching
Lets give him an army of experienced part time assistant coaches
Lets put him through training programs to grow his coaching skills so the kids benefit.

the above is possible under the new model, its not possible under the current model because the primary focus of SF is not to develop talent.

The national sporting landscape is a competitive
market where sports compete for the best athletes
to play their game. The AFL and our AFL Clubs have
high expectations for the talent system in WA, to
ensure that talented athletes are trained, developed
and prepared both physically and mentally for
their competition.
The BCG report identified that the talent produced
by WA for the AFL is in decline. The number of top
20 draft picks has been declining by 10% pa over
the last 10 years. This is consistent with the views
of AFL clubs, who rate WA the worst or second
worst state in terms of ‘focus on preparing players
for the AFL’ and ‘ability to prepare players for
the AFL’.
This has been driven by a few factors. Firstly, an
inadequacy in resources supporting the talent
pathway in WA. In the last 12 months the WAFC
has put significant effort into increasing resources
and structures within the WAFC to support talent
development.
The second factor relates to the pathways and
competitions available to participants. To maximise
the development of talent, a fully-aligned system is
required, with a clear ‘player first’ mentality, which
puts player development ahead of team results.
Thirdly, the drop out rates in male youth football has
reduced the pool of players available to recruit into
the talent pathway.

going by the players drafted out of South in recent times and the number of local kids playing in their league and reserves what do you reckon they have been doing in their colts if it hasnt been developing talent ?

Why then has South Australia been so successful with their talent identification programs?

The talent continues to be drafted , Their performances at National 16s and 18s Championships have been unsurpassed over the years?

They still run their talent identification programs through their SANFL clubs!

I have no doubt they have been developing talent there is clear proof of that.
Most WAFL clubs are broke and rely on external funding- Clubs are forced to cut corners.

I am not aware of any WAFL colts team that is better resourced than its league team.

Are you quoting directly from the report? If you are, it would be appropriate to make that known. I repeat when did the WAFC takeover from the WAFL clubs' junior councils?

By the way the "'player first' mentality" is code for don't give a stuff about the consequences and the players' welfare after they have been spat out of the sausage factory.

According to the logic of Tugga a bloke like Trent Cooper wouldn't have got a look in for the Swans Colts Coaching position despite having an experienced coaching/playing background at both WAFL & Community level as he didn't play AFL.
I wonder if the many boys he has helped develop into either AFL players and or WAFL League footballers would have that same opinion?

This talent pathway is not much different from what is occurring here in the West, as you say tugger I would guess the SANFL clubs would get a bigger slice of the pie from the South Australian Football Commission so as they are able to do more within their means....
Thank christ one stae has the balls to stand up to the AFL juggernaut....
