That 1984 grand final was a belter of a game. Kevin Taylor flattened a Swans player (cant remember who) in the opening minutes of the game, then Swans went on a rampage scoring 10 goals to zip in the first quarter. I thought we had the game won, but the Sharks came back with 9 in the 2nd quarter. Swans did kick one crucial goal into the breeze in that quarter to lead 11 to 9 at half time. I'm almost certain that Ken Marshall kicked that vital goal. East Freo kept on coming in the 3rd quarter and at one stage closed to within a point which is incredible when you think they were 10 goals down at one stage, but thankfully they ran out of gas by playing catch up footy and Swans ran away with it. I think I celebrated that premiership more than any other until 2010!

38 games-14 goals (1983-85)
Kevin Taylor was another handy recruit from your mob Freeze a bit of a highlights package tho you blokes probably ended up with Neesham & Solin in exchange! :pinch:

Have watched that 84 GF a few times mike. The speed and tempo and ball movement, physical clashes. That was a crazy first half of footy. If the WAFL could produce that standard of footy today ,,crowds would not be a debating issue as it is now.

BH: thanks for your thoughts mate; I think Melrose and Neesham gave great service, along with the many others you have mentioned. I remember poor Sims going down, unfortunate indeed. I had completely forgotten that Brett Farmer played out your way, it is funny how the mind works. Hetherington was a good solid league footballer, I agree. It is true too, that Ralph was a bit of a phenomenon at the time, and, to blanket him was a great effort. I have always had a soft spot for Tony Solin, because, as you know, he came over to Subi for a couple of years.

It was a great era for SD and the competition.

Only attracted a crowd of 41,000, way down on the 50,000 plus records only a few years prior, sadly interest in WAFL was already in decline as the flight of players to the Vfl gathered momentum.

Dead right GTR I have seen some very very ordinary League footy this year mostly by my side but most of the others too ..even well down on the standard of only a few years back not just the 80s!
