EF and EP fans should look away for this post. I was just thinking about the eveness or otherwise of the competition, and to some degree the, the premiership tallies of the clubs mask the strength of the blue and whites and blue and blacks. On just about every occasion clubs outside the traditional big three won the flag, they defeated EP or EF in the grand final. In short, EF could have been very close to 30 flags and EP 20 flags by 1980.

Interesting, the period between 1959 and 1972 would have been torturous even though your club was successful in making lots of grannies and finals and poignant how the games record holders in Craig Wulf and his predecessor Derek Chadwick have suffered GF losses in a similar fashion. Enough for a lifetime of nightmares and insomnia
Beneath the Southern cross i stand, on Bassendean Oval, can in hand, Swan Districts, you Farkin Beauty!

Happily Swandog, I have never had to live with EP's grand final record from the time period you mentioned as I don't support them; they did manage to beat the Lions in 1959, something which does tend to jar a little.

Just going back to the big three thing: if you include all their premierships, up to 1980, they won 54, or getting close to 70 per cent of the time. EF also lost a couple of flags by less than a kick and had another taken away by the league.

In addition, between 1951-1980, leaving aside 1970, at least one of the big three appeared in the grand final.

Grassy: Thanks -- that was a bit daft of them. I am happy the red and blacks go that flag. Your first, and therefore, arguably most important premiership.

ArkRoyal wrote: The competition has never been even: up to 1980 three clubs won the premiership more than 50 per cent of the time. The last Subiaco colts premiership was 1989; people should make of that what they will terms of whether the club has needed to import players to stay competitive.

Interesting choice of words and I quote "to stay competitive". Who did you recruit the season after you lost one game by one point?

Swan: How many flags did Subi win between 1989 and 2004? They were non-competitive in that decade pure and simple. How many Subiaco players did SD recruit in 1983?

The good thing about it was that I got to see two former Subi players appear in the finals for the time.

You might also remember, Swan 42, that SD also signed two Perth players in the same era, despite being premiers and the PFC being a lowly side

The job of SD then was to win the flag and they won it.

AR I don't recall a season where we lost only 1 game for the season and by 1 point.

I would also point out that although the crowds plummeted immediately after the introduction of the Eagles it took some time for this to be filtered through in terms of the player quality in the WAFL. Since the turn of the century how many Grand Finals have you competed in and how many have you won? Also, how many wooden spoons have you collected in the same time period?

Or September 23,1978. :(

Since then,2 Bermagui Bronzes are as close as we got to a Shot at the Title.

For all too brief a moment,we were Premiership Contenders in 1986 and 1997.

Not much to speak of otherwise.

appalling record.

Nup 1989 was a resurgent year and GF crowd despite terrible weather was almost 40K..bigger than previous years...

went pear shape after that.
