Can someone remind me where the TV rights issue is at? Someone told me today that Channel 10 had bought the rights for 2014, but I can't remember reading about this anywhere. Is this just rumour? And is the WAFL still with the ABC for 2013? There's been nothing in the paper about it since about August...

Yes that's right. If you can still call it the wafl, can confirm ABC TV will be broadcasting for the 2013 season. And that is the last year it will be shown on the national broadcaster. From 2014 one of the commercial tv stations will.

Really? I don't get it!! Why would a commercial network be interested in a product that by all reports isn't rating that well anymore and is relatively expensive to produce. (So the ABC says)?

Oh but guys those 2 great spin doctors Nisbett & Rosich promised us all that the media interest in the WAFL would increase dramatically if the WCE & Fr got there reserves team wish ...and as it stands we now have 1 less radio station covering the games next year & no TV coverage guarenteed after 2013 with the ABC pulling out!

Where are the clowns like anchorman etc who thought this concept was going to be the great white knight/saviour of our great 127 year old competition now I wonder???

All understood La Hincha. It was last year ABC TV said they were pulling the pin after the conclusion to the 2013 season. Apparently it's costing the abc tv thirty thousand dollars per week to broadcast a match is the figure I've heard. Apparently television production staff at the ABC's Perth office will be cut by over half, which is one of the reasons live football coverage is unlikely to continue next year on the national broadcaster. The wafl has been shown on the abc tv ever since I can remember. We used to sit in front of the old black and white tv when I was a young'un on a saturday afternoon for the live wafl match all the way from Perth and we thought it Christmas again if our favourite team was being shown too.
The broadcasts are popular and I can only assume abc are looking at the bottom line here. It won't only happen with the wafl. State leagues in Victoria and South Australia fear the loss of the ABC coverage would slash their audiences and deny them a platform to promote football. The abc do recognize the importance of the broadcasts and maybe, just maybe if more finances and logistical support happens, the broadcaasts may continue on abc?
I did hear on the grapevine one of the commercial stations were interested. I'm sure they could jazz the broadcasts up a bit, making money from the advertising etc. But the commercial broadcast would not be as high quality. Up to this point, haven't heard any recent announcements.

Mate, I just don't see that the commercials would be up for it.....but damn, I hope I'm wrong. It seems to me it was just a "concept" when the 2 AFL clubs were pushing their host club barrow in "The West"

After all, it's so much cheaper to show a re-run. I'll believe it when I see it.

And also, the abc broadcasts go beyond the black stump and can be received state -wide. Whereas the commercial broadcasts probably show in the main populated areas?
I'm not being paid to advertise for said commercial tv company but it was 9 that is said to be interested in the broadcasts. For everyones sake, hoping it stays as is.
ABC have previously and still do an excellent coverage.

Surely if 7 or 9 took it up they could deliver it to the regionals via GWN ir Win.

Absolutely Smokester.

I don't know whether GWN or WIN have multiple digital channels or not. If they do then there would be no reason why.

I would imagine that the regionals would get Go & Gem as Win owns 9 Perth.
It's not the size of the dog in the fight. It's the size of the fight in the dog.
Winning isn't everything. It's the ONLY THING !!!!!!
