Geez, everybody here is awfully quick to forget that the WAFC's original plan for this year's GF was to have it the week after the AFL GF, only for the clubs to bitch and moan and force them to change it back to where it is now!

Any idea what the reason was ?
There were a couple of reasons, Optus was actually unavailable for the date the WAFC wanted (October 7) and the WAFL clubs objected to the season being extended from 18 to 20 rounds.
Also the grand final is now on the Sunday of the long weekend giving the players a chance to celebrate/recover on the Monday. Being a long weekend there are always going to be other activities to tempt people but I still think there will be a reasonable crowd there
Unfortunate, only good thing is day off afterwards. We went back to the traditional Saturday format for a couple of years there.

If the WAFL wants to pursue hosting the GF the week after the AFL GF (which I think is an awesome idea that helps lift the profile of the WAFL) then it’s unlikely that Optus will ever be available. As a multi-use venue the last weekend of AFL matches would be a PF two weeks prior - but could be 6 weeks prior if the WA sides continue to finish bottom 8.

If Optus isn’t available, would we prefer the later GF date held at a traditional WAFL ground or the current GF timing at Optus?

Good points Tiger, long term I would like the WAFL to have its own boutique venue for all finals, capacity of around 20K with excellent comfort, high quality lights for a Twighlight GF and world class facilities, at the moment until either the WACA, Leederville or Fremantle are developed to an acceptable standard we are stuck with Optus. and being dictated to when and where it can host and how much they want to charge.

sorry but the facts are that that old bastard Barnett fooled everyone - WA football was supposed to be the big winner out of getting rid of Subiaco Oval
AFL and the operators seem to be the ones raking in the coin and somehow the WAFC just does nothing but pay themselves ridiculous wages
Thank the Liberals for the mess at Optus Stadium

Yeah such a pity that the Libs had the foresight to build a world class stadium in Perth that caters for multiple sports and attracts international acts.

The WAFL does need a second-tier venue that can host the GF. The redeveloped WACA is not going to be big enough, Leederville makes the most sense with its capacity and central location. Be great to see Subiaco redeveloped as the home base of WAFL football again.

yeah
the same foresight to build that ugly waste of taxpayer coin Elizabeth Quay as a monument to themselves
yeah that's right the same foresight that gave us the Belltower more waste of taxpayers coin
and then there's the $300M black hole with the property developer investment in Cockburn
and now look at the fools - an extinct party who aren't even in opposition

I'll be there for the Reserves Grand Final starting at 9.20. When the game is over, that is it for me for football for 2023. Not hanging around for the Colts or League, and wont be watching the AFL Grand Final the following weekend.

well said Southerner, there is no such thing as a 'multi-purpose sports ground'; not even the MCG pretends otherwise, nor the VFL itself.  In WA, football and cricket should demand compensation from the crown. Nor should they sign anymore long term contracts to play at the ground.

What drugs have you been on?

Everyone knew from the outset that Optus was a multi sport venue that's what makes it viable, yes AFL and international cricket are the major events , its a world class facility that has outstanding sports and concerts the venue doesnt stop for a half filled second tier event like the WAFL GF, unlike Subi it is not a footy alone venue, Taxpayers have already forked out a mint to the WAFC and Eagles to move across from the dump at Subi.
