Claremont just missed the top 4 by 0.01% in 1978.Was that the year Graeme Moss returned from Victoria.Probably when the Krakourer brothers arrived from Mt Barker.
Top of the table home and away 1979.But crashed out V the two Fremantle sides,in the finals.
They have been a power Wafl club since the late 1970's. .
Claremont also done really well in the Escort Cup 1978-79-80.Beating Melbourne,Hawthorne,Geelong,StKilda,Norwood,Footsgray. Carlton. But there super 1981 team was beaten by Subiaco in the first round. And we all remember the sprinklers at VFL Park V Hawks.

Hard to argue against you, BH. Great work. The lopsidedness is stark.

Maybe one point against (?) you is that in the 1980s, Perth and East Perth got progressively worse -before the Eagles came into existence. Subi were regularly kicking 170 + points in games in 85 and 86. As mentioned on this site before, demographics were already turning against you, or maybe the shift in good manufacturing jobs out of the eastern suburbs had an effect.  I'm assuming the latter point. I have no data.

What happened from 1945 to 1987. 32 years. Was that period lopsided?

A quick glance at premierships tells me it wasn't- subi and Claremont the least successful. Maybe Perth was a  more even society then. A better gini coefficient.

At the start of 1980 the premiership tallies were as follows:
EF 25
WP 15
EP 14
SF 10
P 7
S 5
C 4

That is pretty lopsided, but I reckon a better comparison period is 46 to 86, inclusive. 40 years between ww2 and the Eagles.

The team in greatest decline has been EF, which went through the season undefeated in 1946; in the last 75 years it has won just eight flags.

JL just had a look between 1940 to 86.
WP 8. SF 8
EP 7. EF 7
SD 6. Perth 6
Subi 2. Claremont 2.
East Perth also lost 10 Grand Finals in that 46 year period.
Without looking at Wooden spoons.Would guess Swans, Subiaco+Claremont would own the lions share.

They don’t like being reminded of that Ark.

Why do you think that DD?  If Ark’s figures are right, then he is right.

EF decline post 46 is more reflective of the seriously high benchmark those EF sides pre 46 set....post 46 - besides Subi and Cl...EF sit around the norm with all the other clubs in terms of premierships won.......hate to think if there was an AFL draft back then, how many  EF youngsters would of been taken.

TOO, out of interest mate, how many finals / GF have Cl played in over the last 25 years?....yeah 2 flags in 25 years on face value seems like the club is struggling....but pretty sure Cl haven't missed too many final series in that time....compared to others.
