I heard they were heard to be wondering aloud, after the 2nd Semi result, who would they be playing after Subiaco - Essendon or Hawthorn?

Looking back Ark although i probably was'nt too happy at the time but i really feel for the little champ Peter Spencer who defected to Subi and narrowly missed a richly deserved flag which eluded his great career and also noticed he kicked 11 goals that final series despite being well past his best.

rl: Spencer also erred in leaving in the middle of 86, as I think he would have played in our gf team ahead of Langdon. He over reacted after getting dropped.

in 85 SD was a hard opponent, beaten only because of Spencer
in 88 we would not have won without Keene; EF thrashed us during the season
in 86 had the game been played at Carlisle we would have lost; I think the PFC got a bit of stage fright in the finals. they won against us with ease at Subi a few weeks before; we nearly lost four of our last seven games, including against EP.

In short we were on the verge of doing the same as CL 79 and SD 80; none of it was planned by Bunton

Bunton won in 86, when he should have, and, did a good job with the help of Keene in 88, but, both were close run things and both were unplanned.

I seem to remember that Subi were "flogged on the track" near the end of the 86 season by Bunton to get them prepared for finals. There was a definite over confidence in the Sharks camp following the second semi result and the expectation that Bennett was going to kick another bag!
