BH-- further to all that good research you did on Subi in the finals, which showed, that, on the whole, the club was unable to make use of playing at home, here some more stuff on second semis. In short, after the modern era -- nineteen thirty one -- Subi won just one second semi in the 20th century; even, Bunton's sides, with the crowd bend them as well, were unable to win second semi finals.

Under Bunton though, Subi seemed to be exceptionally good at losing the 2nd semi, getting a good look at their opponent, winning the prelim and then turning the tables in the big one. 86 and 88 attest to that. The idea of going via the preliminary final has plenty of merit. Just look at the 88 preliminary - would of been as fun for Subi as it was heartbreaking for the blue and whites.

For all the hype, 7k more than the WAFL in a 50K stadium is pretty piss poor.

Still 7 K more than our GF and 7 K more able to attend the game - and at a great venue. Piss poor was the idea of holding our GF at Freo oval - surely most of those who did manage to get a ticket would have preferred it to be somewhere else.

7K - big deal in a 50,000 stadium with 25 tickets available,,,you call that a success..lol

Nah everyone I knew was wrapped having it at freo, 5 mins from home and pubs on the door step and easy getting home...shat on Optus in every respect.,

I think you are letting your imagination run away a bit Bazza. Having the game close to your home is hardly a reason for having it at Freo Oval - so draw a line through that. Does provide some insight into how self absorbed you are though. Most of the crowd would of preferred not to have had to sit on concrete with no protection from the the weather. The conservative estimate of 10 K who missed out because it was held at Freo would of wished it wasn't played at Freo Oval. All these people you know - what sort of number are we talking here? !0? 20? So that is 10 or 20 against 20 thousand. Having the GF at Freo Oval has only been successful if your intention is to junk the competition.

Convenience of transport and location is a pretty important factor to a lot of people , Optus is a pain in the arse to get to from the Western Suburbs , and the PTA don't put special trains on, especially for locals and as it happened for Claremont people from the Western burbs it worked out easier as well. They might make the effort for the AFL but for WAFL its another matter.

Lol I have heard it all for excuses now!
How many people in the Western Suburbs even follow the WAFL nowadays?
The 2 clubs represented in that area have always had the smallest followings in the WAFL in CL & SU.
Football heartland is in the Eastern Suburbs where Optus is the easiest ground to get to along with Basso & Lathlain!
Face it you are one of the very minute few who thought Fremantle was a great idea, the vast majority of WAFL followers disagree and the smallest WAFL GF crowd in 90 years attests to that fact!

I am beginning to think that perhaps Bazza finds commonsense too banal.

If the football heartland is in the Eastern Suburbs BH, then why are Perth and SD fans constantly seeking zone tweaking?...and how come Cl zone is so bloody prosperous for them if hardly anyone in it is following or interested?.... doesn't make sense TBH....

DF, pity that mate...the local team in Christchurch wear red and black...actually the Crusaders have won more flags in the past decade then Perth have won in their entire WAFL existence LOL....but then again, it is only rugby..

Let's just hope this heartland geography lesson from BH, puts all this zone inequality whinging to bed once and for all.

tm: I know what you mean, this was the positive interpretation of what happened to Subi in the finals during that era.

in 85 SD was a hard opponent, beaten only because of Spencer
in 88 we would not have won without Keene; EF thrashed us during the season
in 86 had the game been played at Carlisle we would have lost; I think the PFC got a bit of stage fright in the finals. they won against us with ease at Subi a few weeks before; we nearly lost four of our last seven games, including against EP.

In short we were on the verge of doing the same as CL 79 and SD 80; none of it was planned by Bunton

Bunton won in 86, when he should have, and, did a good job with the help of Keene in 88, but, both were close run things and both were unplanned.

PS EF was on an 8 game winning streak going into the 86 gf including two wins against Subiaco. Bunts would not have planned that, either. Looking back, I think this is why Percy Johnson got very angry on Channel rick the next day.

What was Percy's take - that Old Easts cracked open the emu export after the 2nd Semi? Nowadays we call it a cultural issue. I am not suggesting Bunton planned it either. Looking back to that time period 2 Flags seems a very good result for Subiaco especially considering the seismic impact that a VFL club being formed, slap bang in the middle, in Perth had.
