Well the race to the bottom has begun, societys ordinary lowest paid workers are penalised once again with penalty rates being slashed. And it won't stop here until they get what they want and cut them all together.
Its a disgrace, won't create any new jobs or bring prices down, will only create a bigger, unhealthy gap between the rich and the poor #wankers
Beneath the Southern cross i stand, on Bassendean Oval, can in hand, Swan Districts, you Farkin Beauty!

Casual workers still get them.

Great news for pubs, and patrons, this should bring prices down and also for uni students should allow a lot more hours for them to work.

great to see common sense prevail and our backward uncompetitive IR laws finally make some progress.

Now we need to catch up on company tax, presently have the highest in OECD, falling SO far behind world its not funny, we are an economic backwater unless we catch up.

for a start it's a decision by the independent Productivity Commission to try to grow small business...second, what is so special about Sunday's that you should get paid twice as much as every other day? do customers of a café pay twice as much for a coffee because its sunday? does the owner get twice as much revenue and hence twice as much profit? if the answer is no then why should workers get paid twice as much as it's not a lot different to Mondays through to Fridays. it's an antiquated hang over from days gone by that no other country in the world as far as I know replicates.

Yep, and small cuts any, like from 175% to 150%...and in many cases no change at all.

As you say , its a hangover when Sunday was a sacrosanct Christian Sabbath when most families went to Church. Now people get on the booze and hang at cafes instead. In light of that how come our Muslim community are not getting double time on a Friday, I mean come on we are a MultiCul. PC society are we not...lol

Im surprised Benjanmin Netinayu wasn't castigating Australia for not paying Jews Sunday penalty rates on a Saturday while he was here...that's the ones that choose to work on the Sabbath.

you can be sure as certain fellas that this ain't gonna reduce the price of your beer or coffee....if you really think that you are living in fairyland.

Bazza there will not be more hours available to Uni students. the full timers and part timers will be forced to work during these periods because they will cost significantly less than the casuals. It actually means less hours for majority of workers who are the casuals who generally cover the unsociable weekend shifts. We won't need em as much during these times when they are actually available to work with these changes...not if they cost significantly more.

What makes you think Part Timers are not students???

And how will be people be "forced' to work.

Also what about all the places that shut on Sundays as they cant afford to pay staff, all of a sudden then can open and hey presto - that's more work champ.

As for cheaper beer, plenty of times I have bought a meal and been hit with a "public holiday or weekend" "fee". I don't pay that any where else in the world.

I write the rosters for both hospo and retail side of the business i work for. We don't employ part timers let alone many full timers as i know most of the rest of the industry doesn't. Casual employees make up the bulk so therefore these wage decreases aside from public hols don't apply. "Forced" may not be the right PC terminology but reality is my full time crew and salaried staff will have their rostered hours redirected in to these areas where penalty rate savings can be made and we will spread things even thinner through the quieter midweek times when the majority of our student casuals aren't available to work. Also very much doubt you will see Public holiday and weekend fees abolished as you would hope(not that we charge them). Never have seen these fees at a retail level only on the food side. Mark my words these fees won't be dropped after today's decision. For the record I would have much rather have seen Casual pay rates adjusted rather than the full time and part time rates. Then it may have made a difference regarding extra hours available
