doesn't no penalty rates on Sundays bring us into line with the rest of the modern world? I cant remember any other country I have been to in my travels where staff are paid extra rates just for Sundays......

The last time a change like this happened was back when they got rid of petrol stations on rosters and allowed them to trade all weekend, or was it when we allowed the pubs to open for more than two hours on a Sunday

Its called progress people, the rest of the world do it so why not Australia.

It may help some people realise the entitlement method we have in Australia, where your entitled to everything you want being given to you is stopping.......or coming into line with the rest of the world

It will actually create a labour problem in the longer run, which will put pressure on wages in the sector to increase. That is just a basic fact of free market economic theory.

Think they already have that Base covered Ark.They will say they can't get Sunday shift workers. And will ask for the mass importing of 457 workers.

gtr: yep very possible indeed; but, they have not thought that policy through either, as importting more foreign labour will only encourage Hansonism. The woman keeps having electoral presents thrown at her all the time.

For the record from what I heard on Sky News this morning the reduction in penalty rates DOES NOT apply to cafes. The penalty rates did not change.

Yep, and small cuts any, like from 175% to 150%...and in many cases no change at all.

As you say , its a hangover when Sunday was a sacrosanct Christian Sabbath when most families went to Church. Now people get on the booze and hang at cafes instead. In light of that how come our Muslim community are not getting double time on a Friday, I mean come on we are a MultiCul. PC society are we not...lol

To repeat: For the record from what I heard on Sky News this morning the reduction in penalty rates DOES NOT apply to cafes. The penalty rates did not change.

PH et al please see link of minimum hourly rates for the USA. A couple of highlights include $7.25 Iowa, Kansas and Kentucky.

gtr: they are on the right track with such a strategy. I have seen similar ads being run by the unions against xonophon, the SA bloke in the senate. Have you seen those?

Bazza there will not be more hours available to Uni students. the full timers and part timers will be forced to work during these periods because they will cost significantly less than the casuals. It actually means less hours for majority of workers who are the casuals who generally cover the unsociable weekend shifts. We won't need em as much during these times when they are actually available to work with these changes...not if they cost significantly more.

What makes you think Part Timers are not students???

And how will be people be "forced' to work.

Also what about all the places that shut on Sundays as they cant afford to pay staff, all of a sudden then can open and hey presto - that's more work champ.

As for cheaper beer, plenty of times I have bought a meal and been hit with a "public holiday or weekend" "fee". I don't pay that any where else in the world.

They will be forced to work because they will be presented with the following:

work on Sundays or I will find someone else to replace you.
