The reason penalty rates were introduced in the day was to stop so-called unfair trading. That is those businesses that were prepared to open on a Saturday afternoon or Sunday a penalty was put on the business by the way of them having to pay time and a half and double time to those employees who worked those shifts.

It’s a rate that doesn’t belong to the employee’s.

In other words it had nothing to do with unions or the employees themselves.

Maybe it was pushed by politicians with the backing of the religious types but I’d say it was wholly to do with equalisation of trade.

You could say even the shop owners were unionised!

I can't remember the person's name but it was specifically said that today's ruling did not cover cafes.

I was just reading the flyers Baz.They could of consulted the ACTU.Baz I wouldn't place or regard the MBA as any better than the Cfmeu.
There members still havnt been paid for the education revolution where they charged the state government 3 times the value of the projects.Same with the Pink Batts Fiasco.Claiming a 200m for a house that was 120m.Guest workers that can't read ,speak english.Tax evasion through pyramid contracting.
