My favourites
C : Jim and Phil Krakouer, Stephen Goulding and Michael Mitchell
EF : Brian Peake, Shane Ellis, Chris Mainwaring
EP : Peter Spencer, Richard Dennis, Dean Turner
Perth : Mick Rea, Oral McGuire, Wayne Ryder, Brian Cousins
SF : Maurice Rioli, Benny Vigona, Willie Roe
S: Peter Featherby, Neil Taylor, Brian Taylor,, Brad Smith
SD: Leon Baker, Phil Narkle, Don Holmes, Troy Ugle and many many more....

Interesting stat for you Ric I just checked back at some old books I have and a discrepancy has appeared in regards to Subiaco's Leading Goalkicker in 1981. It shows Gary Buckenara as having won it but 1 publication has him with 42 goals and another has him with 40 goals? Brian Taylor is showing in both as having won it with 34 goals in 1982. I wonder how this discrepancy has appeared?

Hi BH

Nar you're right My honour board is currently including all games including NFC games - so I need to fix that before I go live with it - taylor kicked 37 WAFL goals plus 8 in two games in the NFC (Escort Cup or whatever it was called in 1981) My stats has Buckenara with 39 goals plus 2 in NFC - good pick up - adding theses additional games has caused me a few minor headaches in my new site, but hopefully either myself or my site visitors can identify them and I can make the corrections

Might have to cross check with the 1981 footy Budgets to see what they say in terms of Buckenaras goals.

Cheers mate

No worries mate I know how tricky it can get with those old Escort Cup games from the late 70s-mid 80s as they get included in the players WAFL games tallies.

As an aside on the net the other day there was some highlights from a SD vs ESS Escort Cup game at Perth Oval from 1979 that was great to see.

1981 hey

The highest scoring year in the history of the WANFL , I think we had 3 different league record scores during the season - Swan Districts piled up 38.21 against Perth , then Claremont racked up 39.20 also against Perth , then in the last qualifying round I witnessed South Fremantle annhiliate West Perth and score 40.18

Late Edit: Come to think of it West Perth got 37.17 at Leedy against East Fremantle too from memory

Bloody pity we kicked 4.12 and a couple of out of bounds in the 2nd Qtr of the Grandie geez :(

1981 was an incredible year of WA footy Southy, as you posted goals galore kicked every week, plenty of the all time great superstars running around in the WAFL for the last time before heading off to Bleak City and we gave both the Vics & SA a licking at Subi Oval that I was lucky enough to see in the flesh....great days! :) :)

Claremont , South Fremantle & Swan Districts in 1981

Across Australia there would only have been Carlton , maybe Collingwood or an absolute full-strength Port Adelaide that would have scratched these three sides

There would have been some serious beatings for any other sides fronting the squads we had.

If you go back & look hard enough I guarantee you'll find some very good players transferring to other sides simply due to not getting a gig in season 1981.

Yeah that 6 year or so period from around 1978/79 to 1984/85 was brilliant from a spectator supporter point of view , geez there were some goliaths of the game

Three of the highest five team scores were recorded in 1981 only separated by Swans 40.11 (251) v Subi in 1979
In Round 2 Swans kicked 38.21 (249) v Perth then in round 17 Claremont who averaged a league record 159 points per game kicked 39.20 (254) also against Perth who incidentally averaged a league record 157 points per game against then in round 21 SF kicked an 'open' record score of 40.18 (258) vs WP. Two others make the top 12!

In 1981 teams averaged 18.12 goals per game and averaged 123.64 points per game to be the highest scoring home and away season in WAFL history.

A look at the top 15 leading goalkickers is like a 'who's who' in WAFL and many favourites mentioned in this thread are included
Ralph 127, Beasley 119, Malaxos 82, Monteeth 78, Hardie 75, B.Farmer 67, Carter 66, Adamson 53, M.Richardson 51, D.Simms 50, P.Krakouer 50, J.Krakouer 49, G.Campbell 48, Sewell 46 and I.Thompson 47

East Perth folk should remember 1981 quite well - after all at the end of year going into 1982 there was their first "little enquiry" to join the VFL
