Yep both very good WAFL players AR, I remember Dean having a shot for goal at Bassendean in 1985 he must have been 70m out and still made the distance with ease.

Interested in other opinions on Peter Sartori back in that era I wonder if Toddy should have left him as a ruckman rather than turning him into a centre half forward as he virtually led us to victory in the 83-84 finals out pointing some of the greatest ruckmen ever produced in WA as a teenager. I know he had a few injury concerns so maybe Toddy was trying to look after him long term but he was outstanding in the ruck so mobile and skilful.

BH: question about 1985 -- Did you think SD could win it again?

I always thought Satori was a bloody good footballer -- he gave the Subi back line a lot of trouble. My instinct would have been to play him at CHF, provided of course your other ruckmen at least held their own around the ground.

Funnily enough as a young bloke back then AR I always thought we could/should win every game but I knew we had come back to the pack compared to the previous 5 years. We gave WP a hiding in the 1st Semi with Sidey and Taylor kicking 16 between them from memory and we may have been in front at 3qtr time in the Prelim against you blokes or it was at least very close but you kicked away to win pretty easily in the end. I remember walking out of the ground at the end of the game in a bit of disbelief at losing a final as it was an unusual feeling for me. I think it all started to go pear shaped in that game when Sidey got reported for kicking Sparks but you blokes had been down for a long time and once you got a sniff of victory you didn't let us back in the contest.

That's why Mick Johns was such a handy recruit for Swans AR, as it freed Sartori up to play in a key position and that was crucial to our 1984 victory.

In answer to your other question, BH might disagree but I wasn't confident going into the 1985 finals as I felt that S and EF had gone a fair way past us by that stage. Even though Swans were not the best team over the season by any stretch of the imagination in any of our premiership seasons 1982 -84, we were playing our best football at the right end of the year. 1985 we were clearly 3rd best in the competition and that's how it turned out.

Yeah fair point Mike although we did manage to beat both Subi at Subi and EF at EF (in Ron Alexander's 300th game) in 85 the fact we lost to both sides at Basso that year showed we had not only come back to the field but both sides had probably gone past us. But to think of how many players we had lost to the East in the previous 5 years and were still around the mark that year underlines how good a side we had back in those days.

BH: I was a bit suprised the other way. I had a look at the preliminary final side which appearred for SD, and as, mikeh pointted out, what I noticed was your big man strength.

Sidebottom
Satori
Johns
Simms
Hutton

so i think Todd got the Satori thing about right.
Did Simms get injurred or just have a bad day? He had low stats. He is another one whom sufferred a lot from injuries, as you know.

From memory AR we swapped Wayne Simms for Shane Bogunovich with Perth for the 85 season. Simms didn't play much footy with us as I think his knee was gone but yeah that is a pretty handy lot of big men especially if you throw in Rance who was still with us in 85 before heading to Footscray in 86maybe even Mullooly was still playing?

AR I always thought Clint Brown was an underrated player for Subi. Started out as a full forward who could kick a bag of goals on his day but then Bunts turned him into a very dependable full back who was rarely beaten. Good player.

If you get a chance, have a look at clint browns game against Dermott Brereton in the 1986 Clash of the premiers. Terrific effort

It was a good side -- which why you led at quarter time and we did not win the game until quite a way into the last quarter
