How did your Colts and Ressies go?

The following season,was different. ;)

It was weird in one sense,as you guys had everyone covered except Roynd 1,then Claremont and a Revved up West Perth got your measure.Come Finals time however,.......

Our Colts and Ressies both made the GF that year and both lost unfortunately Grassy after knocking over DG's Subi in both grades in the Prelim.
The League going down in 80 & 81 turned out to be a blessing in disguise as it made us real hungry for another hat trick in the years after.
Claremont & Souths were also outstanding sides in that era and the 3 clubs played some quite scintillating football that I will never forget.

ArkRoyal wrote: just on my selection of Stephan Sells, he was a brilliant goal sneak. I remember a game at Claremont -- where we had not won a game since the beginning of time, similar to most away grounds --- where, as Frank Sparrow would have said: 'he back spun beautifully out of a pack of players snapping a big six pointer', and Subi went on to win. The great thing was that, not only was it captured by channel 7, but it was part of a advert for long time, and I had the pleasure of watching it for a good couple of years. Can anybody remember it?

Also saw an interview with him on the Subi web site and his second last kick of the 1985 grand final, has apparentlly stayed with him. He said he managed to get around Colin Waterson and David Rakin was between him and the goal. In the small part of a split second, he tossed up whether to dummy Rankin or have a shot at goal, and after that he just re-called spraying the shot for a point.

Yep remember that goal and ad AR, Sells was certainly an old time goalsneak and every club had one or 3 in that era Donny Holmes & Richo being ours but you also had Vigona & Hardie at SF, Malaxos & Farmer at CL, Simms, Buzz, Ryder at PE, Judge & Cassidy at EF, Bewick & Alderton at WP, Kickett & McGuire at EP plus the mercurial Bucky at SU as well. Some of those goals Bucky kicked in those unforgettable State of Origin games in the 80s I for one will never forget.

BH we lost some good players after the 81 season.Beasley and Holden to the VFL and Casey and Gillespie retired. Not sure if Hoyer went east 80 or 81.
Mike Richardson and Tony Solin got in a fight at the Dianella Hotel over a game of pool.Richo got a broken arm.

Dead right mate.
Yep we lost players of the calibre of Beasley, Holden, Williams, Sutton & Neesham to the VFL after 81, Smith with his shocking knee injury plus Gillespie, McDonald and a couple of other stalwarts to retirement.
Hoyer, Casey & Bell left after the 80 GF gtr.
When you look back on that era it was astounding that we won 3 in a row considering how many players went to the VFL after every season and yet we had young blokes that would constantly step up when given the opportunity after only a handful of games previously.

Simms was unlucky to play in a weak side, deserved more credit. The same was true for Ryder up to a point, at least until 1986. I remember all of those names from goal of the day segments.

AR I always thought Clint Brown was an underrated player for Subi. Started out as a full forward who could kick a bag of goals on his day but then Bunts turned him into a very dependable full back who was rarely beaten. Good player.

A player who could have been anything from that era who took on and beat the likes of Moss, Michael, Alexander in the 83 finals series as an 18yo Peter Sartori. Doesn't get talked about much these days but gees he could play.

BH: I think your 100 percent correct on Clinton Brown. The man had a lot of natural ability particularlly in the air; he could be unreliable for goal at times, but, I might be being a bit harsh. In regards, Bunton, I think he switched Dean and Brown so he made him into a backman. Both were successful so you can't really quibble with it, but he could have left it and all would have been fine.

It was sad what happened to Dean. He was the longest consistent kick seen anywhere in Australia. He played one game for us when he got back from Melbourne and injuries had really restrictted his kicking.
