Cant escape the fact the swim team flopped badly, we had 8 world record holders going in, offcials expected up to 10 golds...

Olympics is not my forte, so please bear with me. Has the swim team ever over-performed. It has won a lot of medals over the years, but I would be interestted to know, if on the whole, those winners were expectted.

Won 8 gold in Melbourne , fair to say thst was over achievement, only got 5 in Sydney in the pool.

Baz -- cheers -- it is a difficult thing to judge because the eras were so different. For example, in 1956, the track and field team had less competition because the world was sill one of Empires.

The reality was that the Canadian Government spent more on field hockey that the Austalian Government had spent on all sport.

Swan 42: the Canadians never got much value for money, because from what I have read, they failled to win a gold medal; the only time such a thing has occurred in the modern Olympics, as every other host nation had/has done so.

The 2 medals in Canada 76.Bronze medal sailing John Burtram of Australia 2 fame. And mens hockey silver v New Zealand.
