This match coming up on Saturday the 7th of June at the Bassendean Oval. One would think it's the match of the day. If memory serves me correctly, was a close affair the last time they met for much of the game. Swans pulled away in the last quarter.
Is it the abc tv game?

Yes the ABC are covering this game.

One has to smile at how things have improved at SDFC. 12 months ago this fixture was one of the worst games of football blokes with educated opinions on this site said they'd seen our team play and we were calling for the coaches head. Was it the week Twomey was dropped? Probably a good lesson for us all that even in the darkest moments we need to keep the faith

Did a little bit of research today. This Swans team is getting up into some pretty rare territory. This weekend they will be going for their 9th win in a row. This is something that Swans have only achieved 3 other times since 1980. There was a 9 game winning streak in the 2010 premiership year (round 6 - round 15), 11 games in a row in 1983 (round 9 - 19) and finally that 18 game streak between round 17 in 1979 and round 13 1980. There have been 2 eight game streaks (1994 and 1982) and 2 seven gamers (1993 and 1984).

Lets see how far they can take this streak.........

Have been keeping some figures for something to do. Swans are doing well with the ball too. They seem to be playing direct. Currently with just under 11½ ball disposals per scoring shot. After R10, all the other teams are on 12 and upwards.

Hi mikeh, the 17 game stretch between 79/80 must not have included finals because 79 was not a flag year? Regular season maybe?

Either way it's great to see swannies playing with great belief and without a team full of mercenaries only in it for the money. And i must hold my hand up as i have quite regularly called for Harding's head over the years but i'm in the process of being proven very wrong.

Goodie if my memory serves me well we came home with a wet sail and finished 5th in 1979. It was the start of a golden era at Basso. Great games, great crowds and some extremely talented and tough footballers.

Correct Swan42. This was the genesis of the team that Toddy had built since he took over in 1977 and contained many of the players who would become legends over the 6 year period in the early to mid 80's where Swans played in 4 grand finals and won 3 premierships.

In 1979 Swans were still a young team and whilst they had some good wins in the first half of the season they were also inconsistent and this is why they did not make the finals that year. There were a few heartbreaking losses during this period, I remember one game at Bassendean against West Perth that we dominated all day, but a guy called Chris Stasinowsky played out of his skin in the last term and led West Perth to a one point victory. Swans even had a chance to snatch the game back right on the final siren but Ian Williams ( a very clever rover) missed the shot.

Swans really put it together in the last 5 games in 1979 and beat Perth and Claremont by 47 points, thrashed Subiaco by 124 points in an amazing game where 60 goals were kicked ( Swans kicked 40 of them!!!),West Perth by 74 points and on the final day in front of a crowd of 14000 at Bassendean, they absolutely flogged eventual Grand Finalists South Fremantle to the tune of 58 points. Who knows what damage they could have done if they had actually made the finals?

The momentum gained at the end of 1979 carried through into 1980 and Swans won an $20000 incentive provided by the Marlboro company for winning 12 games in a row. Their winning sequence was finally broken by a South Fremantle team that boasted players like Maurice Rioli, Stephen Michael, Noel Carter, Basil Campbell... the list goes on. Undoubtedly a golden era for Swans and WAFL footy. Probably the last one sadly.

the 60 goal game in 79 was when I kicked a lazy 13.

and Bucky kicked 9 off a forward flank for Subi in a losing side.
