This defeat has probably been coming for a couple of weeks. Swans footy reached its high point in the last game against Subiaco and the home game v East Fremantle in early May. Since then we have been patchy and relied on bursts of goals to get us home. The reason that Swans have continued their winning run was that their opposition was not good enough to take advantage of their lapses.

Well, today we came up against a team that was good enough and Swans in the end were found wanting. It was a funny game, even though the scores were close for much of the 120 minutes, I always had the feeling that Subiaco were in control, their disposal was so much cleaner than ours, there were just too many fumbles and dropped marks by Swans particularly in the backline.

We only ever led in the game for about two minutes in the 3rd quarter and this sparked the lions into kicking 6 unanswered goals to take a stranglehold on it. I have to give credit to our guys for fighting the game out and when Ryan Davis kicked his 5th goal at about the 15 minute mark of the last quarter, I had a fleeting thought that we just might snatch it, given that Subi were coming off a 5 day break and they only had 2 rotations. I had hoped that maybe they had run out of gas, but the effort of playing catch up footy all day took it's toll on our guys in the last 15 minutes and an 8 goal loss was perhaps a little unfair on Swans given the competitiveness of the game.

I thought we missed Ames so much today as the defence appeared clumsy and lacking in its usual poise. Obviously the loss of Ugle early didn't help either. There were many goals conceded by poor turnovers and just a lack of pressure on the Subiaco forwards. There was one incident in the 3rd quarter where a Swans player kicked in after a point but went over the line. From the subsequent bounce down, a Subiaco player was able to snap a goal virtually unchallenged. All it needed was someone to smash it through for another point. Brent Latch dropped an elementary mark which led to a Lions goal at a crucial time and generally looked uncertain. He is a young guy so hopefully he can learn from this.

Swans stayed in the game for so long because of some very good individual performances, Elari, Riggio, Davis and Boekhurst were all excellent contributors but this is not how the team won 8 games in a row and for the first time I could probably point to about half a dozen passengers in the team. They will only win games if everyone contributes to the cause which has certainly been the case for the season to now.

So a reality check for the boys and it will be interesting to see how they respond to this. I think they will regroup but of far more concern to me today was the pathetic performance of the reserves who could only kick 2 goals in four quarters of football. You would have to say that nobody would be pushing the current league players for their spots based on that performance.

Poor umpiring once again marred this contest and Stuart Parry once again was a major culprit. 250 games of shite today for him and a disgraceful act that was reported to me by a fellow SD supporter (I didn't see it) was he held the ball up to the Macca stand on his way off at half time grinning a laughing, pathetic if true. He has a knack for paying momentum stopping shit decisions that halt a team on top like we were when coming home like a steam train to get within a goal
I noticed during the game also that players are now allowed about 4 or 5 attempts to rid themselves of the ball whilst being spun around 3 times before a holding the ball decision is contemplated? Obviously a directive from the AFL and the inept Sinclair and co. And a baffling call of kicking in danger against Jukes after he soccered a goal was a joke and had us scratching our heads. Well done to Subiaco though and the substantial $$$ forked out on Bolland, Delahunty and co is money well spent. And Hampson had a big game plus Deluca always dangerous too.
We lacked our usual run and carry today and fel into the trap of a short kicking game. I though Davis, Notte, Riggio and Elari were 4 of our better players and Blakely battled manfully. The margin flattered Subi a little as they are no way 50 plus better than us, quite a few junk goals at the finish
Happy to be 8-2 though against all odds and with a heap of players to come back in

Does anyone know how much longer Tallen is out for? It amazed me that he was actually named in the squad on Thursday, but luckily sanity prevailed

I wonder if Tony Notte is a contender for Mark of the Day?
Slips over behind his opponent and lands on his back in the goal square and manages to mark the ball whilst laying down. Don't see too many marks like that taken.
