Did I just read that last comment. Just cos a coach has success that doesn't make him a top coach. REALLY. What a stupid comment.

to judge a coach you can only go by win/loss records and the amount of development in the player group...so I take your point with Dawson in 2008 but having the cattle doesn't necessarily mean a coach will be successful either so don't think anyone can discount the efforts of the last 3 subi coaches just because they had very good personnel on the park...i think it takes a combination of several things to win a flag including an element of luck.

thanks for your feedback Buddy - so you would say that Scott Watters is a top coach ?
St Kilda couldnt bounce him out quick enough and nobody else has given him a gig at WAFL or AFL level yet he is a top coach ?
he was no doubt good at his job at Subi but to be a top coach one would expect he could go further in his coaching I would think but you obviously disagree.

MO is correct. Success does not always deem you a good coach. And BC I think you contradicted yourself a little where you said it may take a combination of things to win a flag. I totally agree with your statement but at the same time you dont always need a good coach to win a flag. A very good football side will coach it self. The coach will simply manage players and implement a structure.

Fielding...I'd suggest the terms coach and manager are interchangeable at WAFL level as implementing structures and a winning game plan is the role of the coach/manager. The old saying still holds true that a team of champions doesn't guarantee success especially in today's footy which is constantly evolving. you need a competent guiding hand to point the team in the right direction. you only have to look at say Carlton this year to see evidence of this after Mick got the flick .

My grandma could coach subi into the finals. With the awesome financial might the club has it'd take a pretty shitty coach not to have success, or some really poor recruiting.

I think she would make a better coach than you tiger of old, given that recent premierships have been coached by Monaghan at WP,Webb at Claremont and now Schofield at Subi involved at Subi previously or presently.Interesting to read in the West last Saturday that Schofield had sought out Phil Walsh to help with coaching ideas when he was appointed at our club.I am sure you can see some of those ideas in use currently as we lead the ladder. Subi are a very professional outfit both on and off the field, something you and a few others might eventually work out one day.
